WINNEMUCCA - Veteran newspaper reporter and editor Steve Lyon of Boise has joined the Humboldt Sun editorial staff.

Lyon, who has nearly 20 years of experience as a reporter and editor, will primarily cover public safety and cops and courts for the Sun. But there will be plenty of other news and features stories to pursue in Winnemucca and Humboldt County.

Lyon is no stranger to northern Nevada. He worked at the Lahontan Valley News in Fallon from 1997 to 2006. As a staff writer at the then-daily newspaper, from 1997 to 2002, Lyon won numerous awards from the Nevada Press Association for news, feature and editorial writing. From 2002 to 2006, Lyon edited the Fallon newspaper.

Most recently, Lyon worked at the Idaho Statesman in Boise as a copy editor from 2008 to 2011. He still has relatives residing in Idaho's capital city, but he is happy he made the trip south.

"I'm thrilled to be back in Nevada and working at a community newspaper," he said. "Covering local news has been a big part of my life. People care about what's going on in their community. I take my responsibilities as a journalist seriously - report the news objectively and in a fair and balanced way."

When he can get away, Lyon also looks forward to exploring the wide-open high desert and seeing the interesting sights in Humboldt County. He is an avid reader, runner and road tripper. He said he might even adopt a border collie to hike the hills around Winnemucca.

Lyon is a graduate of Boise State University, where he earned a B.A. in English literature and nonfiction composition.
