Lowry High School's Academic Challenge team are champs again.
Feb. 26, Lowry beat teams from Fernley, Spring Creek and Truckee during a double elimination tournament in Winnemucca.
When all was said and done, Lowry was crowned the Northern Nevada champions for the second year in a row.
According to coach Larry Storm, the championship capped an excellent season where the team had a record of 18 wins and 5 losses.
"The team has made an impressive run the last few years," he said. "We've had three first place and three second place finishes."
Academic Challenge competitions center around a series of questions directed at five-member teams from each school.
Individual members use electronic buzzers to help their team accumulate points by responding in the quickest manner possible to questions ranging from literature, history and geography to math, science and current events.
Lowry competed against teams from Battle Mountain, Ely, West Wendover and Spring Creek during weekly matches.
The group lost only to Spring Creek during the season; however, the team came back on tournament day to defeat Spring Creek 23-17 along with sound wins over Fernley and Truckee.
This year's team included Dain Maher, Hayden Jeppsen, Chris Barta, Ryan Rasmussen, Karen Esparza, Josh Dunnington, Trenten Smith, John Slaton, Jacob Palmer, Suhani Bhakta and Shanna Armstrong.
In addition to Storm, Lisa Scott served as coach, and will continue to lead the team in the future following Storm's retirement at the end of this school year.[[In-content Ad]]
