Lowry wrestlers win Vaquero Classic

The Lowry High School wrestling team kept up its winning ways, by claiming the Vaquero Classic last weekend in Fernley.

The Buckaroos collected 263.50 points, to beat two Division I North schools. Spanish Springs was second at 245 and Carson was third with 220 points. Churchill County (169.50) and Battle Mountain (133) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Thirty-one teams from Nevada and California took part in the two-day event.

Beau Billingsley at 170 pounds and Luis Cardenas (285) won individual titles. Billingsley was named the most outstanding wrestler in the upper weight classes.

Brandon Okuma (152), Shaun Mentaberry and Tytin Johnson (195) both finished second. Okuma lost to Yerington's Riley Neville by decision, Mentaberry was defeated by Battle Mountain's Jeff Oakes and Johnson was knocked off by Spanish Springs' Brik Chesley in a decision.

Eric Brooks (132), Gabe Molina (138) and Jed Johnson (182) were third, Trase Bell (106) was fourth and Nate Nelson (126) and Anthony Hummel (220) were fifth.

Bryan Ramos (195) was third and Blake Duncan (160) finished fourth for the Lowry Gold squad. The Lowry Gold finished 12th as a team.

The Buckaroos are scheduled to attend the Yerington Invitational on Saturday.
