Lowry wrestlers win regional championship over Spring Creek Buckaroos capture eight individual titles, have 11 in finals

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School wrestling team won its fourth consecutive Northern 3A championship on Saturday, beating out Spring Creek by 55 points at Spring Creek High School.

The Buckaroos won the title with 301.50 points, while the Spartans had 246.50 points. Fernley was third with 158 points and Elko and Churchill County rounded out the top five with 132 and 131 points, respectively.

Lowry qualified 17 of its 18 grapplers for the state tournament, which will take place this Friday and Saturday at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.

The Buckaroos also had the most individual champions at the regional tournament with eight and 11 wrestlers in the finals. The eight champions include Eric Brooks at 113 pounds, Gus Duncan (145), Beau Billingsley (152), Jace Billingsley (160), Michael Billingsley (170), Ryan Nelson (182), Cody Andersen (220) and Fernando Herrera (285). Spring Creek was next in line with four individual champions, while Elko had two.

Lowry had three wrestlers finish second, including Daniel Pollock (106), Aaron Nelson (126) and Daniel Raynor (132). Three other Buckaroo wrestlers were third (Lane Mentaberry, Tytin Johnson and Luis Cardenas), giving the Buckaroos 14 finishers in the top three. Brandon Okuma and Juan Ochoa were fourth and Blake Duncan was fifth. Johnson, Cardenas and Blake Duncan are non-scorers.

The NIAA State Wrestling Tournament presented by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Farmers Insurance gets underway on Friday at 9 a.m. with the 4A division. Friday's 3A wrestling will start at 4:30 p.m. Wrestling will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
