Once they settled on when and where to play, the outcome was decided pretty quickly.
The Lowry High School football team was set to travel to Wooster for the second consecutive season last Friday, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Dense smoke from the King Fire near Sacramento, Calif., forced the game to be moved to Winnemucca. The Buckaroo took advantage of their home field, beating the Colts 44-20.
"We moved the ball pretty good against them," said LHS head coach Tim Billingsley. We stopped ourselves quite a bit though. We had over 100 yards in penalties and we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. It was still a good win for us."
Lowry (3-1 overall, 2-1 Division I-A) jumped out to a 15-0 lead after 12 minutes of play, when Wooster cut the deficit to 15-8 early in the second quarter. The Buckaroos bounced back with the next 15 points to extend the margin to 30-7, but the Colts scored a late touchdown right before to make the score 30-13.
Lowry increased the advantage to 37-13 midway through the third quarter, when the Colts countered with a score at the start of the fourth quarter to make it 37-21. That was as close as Wooster got, with Lowry scoring minutes later to account for the final tally.
The Buckaroos had their best night of the year on the ground with 449 yards on 43 carries. Beau Billingsley and Donovan Brumm ran for 146 and 112 yards, respectively, and both scored two touchdowns.
"We ran the ball well," said the coach. "Beau and Donovan looked good and the offensive line did their job. Beau is getting healthier after suffering that hip pointer at Fernley."
Christian Gray ran for 73 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown and the junior was 8-of-14 passing for 149 yards and a touchdown. Sterling Dennis and Thomas Schwartz had 27 and 36 yards on the ground.
Omar Guerrero caught four passes for 76 yards and one touchdown, Brumm caught two passes for 42 yards and Garrett Naveran had three receptions for 31 yards.
"Defensively, we did a good job," Billingsley said. "Wooster likes to throw the ball around quite a bit and they don't have a strong running game. We will see the same thing with South Tahoe this week. South Tahoe doesn't run the ball much and they throw the ball all over the place."
