Lowry track and field team wraps up regular season with home invite Stepper wins high jump for Buckaroos

WINNEMUCCA - Teams from northern Nevada had their last chance to get ready for the regional championships, as 17 schools landed in Winnemucca this past Saturday for the Lowry Invitational.

The Buckaroos had a chance to see six of the eight other teams in the Northern 3A, with Truckee and South Tahoe not making the trip west.

The Lady Bucks placed fourth as a team with 67.5 points. Elko won the team title with 157.50 points, followed by Spring Creek (96) and Churchill County (78.5).

The Lowry boys were seventh with 39.5 points. Churchill County left as the winner at 177.50 points, while Elko (111) and Rite of Passage (91) were second and third.

Robert Stepper led the way for all of the Lowry athletes, as he won the high jump by clearing 6 feet. In addition, the sophomore was 12th in the long jump at 17-04.50.

Sergio Castaneda and Taylor Martin paced the boys throwers on the cool and sunny day. Castaneda was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 44-01.50 and eighth in the discus at 119-06. Martin had his best outing in the discus, placing sixth with a throw of 12-10 and was ninth in the shot put at 41-08.50.

Kevin Boyle finished with two top-10's, placing fourth in the pole vault by clearing 12-00 and sixth in the high jump at 5-6. Matt Jones finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 18-10 and tied for 13th in the pole vault with teammate Michael Billingsley, clearing 10-0.

Hayden Jeppsen and Andy Martinez were 11th and 16th in the 3,200 meters with times of 11:40.30 and 12"53.74, respectively. Sterling Dennis placed 13th in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.00. Morgan Dougherty was 14th in the 1,600 meters (5:03.82), Bret Hammon placed 15th in the 100-meter dash (12.02) and Jeremiah Teichert placed 14th in the triple jump at 34-01. In addition, Teichert was 16th in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 18.78.

The Lady Bucks had a number of strong finishes as well, starting with a third-place finish by Marion House in the 3,200 meters with a time of 13:02.42. The junior also placed seventh in the 1,600 meters at 6:02.62.

Jasmin Landa led the throwers, as the sophomore finished third in the shot put with a toss of 32-10. Landa also placed 14th in the 100-meter dash in a time of 14.28 and 17th in the discus at 77-07.

Kim Garcia and Chandra Waner had top-10's, with Garcia eighth in the shot put with a throw of 20-07 and Wanner ninth in the discus at 87-11. In addition, Garcia was 14th in the discus and Waner 21st in the shot put.

Rachel Sigurdson continued her strong sophomore season, finishing third in the pole vault at 8-0, to go with a sixth-place outing in the high jump, clearing 4-6. Junior Raven Black was fourth in the high jump at 4-10 and 10th in the pole vault (6-0).

Meg Montero and Taylor LaTray were fifth in the 100-meter dash and 400 meters, respectively, with times of 13.86 and 1:05.80.

Alex Schirrick posted two sixth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (13.88) and 200 meters (28.12). Auri Criddle finished 10th in the 200 meters in a time of 28.95 and 14th in the 100-meter hurdles at 19.35.

Freshman Monique Rodriguez finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.49 and was 22nd in the 400 meters at 1:09.18. Kelsey Killpack was 12th in the 300-meter hurdles at 56.55, Irdiana Gonzalez 14th in the 400 meters at 1:09.18 and Casey Kieser 16th in the 400 meters in a time of 1:11.12.

Morgan Rasmussen and Carly Bell tied for 16th in the pole vault, as each cleared 5-0.

The Buckaroos make the trip to Fallon on Friday and Saturday for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. The meet starts at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The top five placers from the Northern 3A meet and the top two placers from the Southern 3A meet qualify for the state championships. The eighth qualifier will be determined by comparing the No. 6 mark (or next best) from the north to that with the No. 3 mark from the south.

The state championships will be held at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno on Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19.
