Lowry track and field team travels to Elko for Kiwanis Invitational Both squads finish fourth in standings

WINNEMUCCA - With the season crossing over to the second half, the Lowry High School track and field team traveled east last Saturday for the Kiwanis Invitational in Elko.

The hometown Indians won both the boys and girls team titles with 203 and 256 points, respectively. Churchill County, Spring Creek and Lowry finished second, third and fourth in both team standings as well. The Lady Bucks picked up 61 points and the Buckaroo boys 51.

Leading the Lowry girls was Raven Black, who finished in a tie for third in the high jump at 4 feet, 6 inches. Her teammate, Rachel Sigurdson, was sixth in the event, clearing 4-4. That same duo also placed in the pole vault, with Sigurdson clearing 7-0 to finish seventh and Black 6-6 for eighth. Sigurdson also added a finish of ninth in the 300-meter hurdles at 1:00.16.

The Lowry throwers had good outings, with Chandra Wanner finishing fourth in the discus at 82-11.5 and 11th in the shot put with a throw of 25-6. Kim Garcia was eighth in both the discus and shot put with tosses of 72-4.25 and 27-1. Rachel Jones finished 13th in the discus and shot, respectively, with throws of 69-1 and 25-1, while Dara Woolever finished 16th in the discus at 60-4.75.

Meg Montero and Alex Schirrick were fifth and sixth in the 100-meter dash with times of 13.72 seconds and 13.92. Schirrick also placed sixth in the 200 meters in a time of 28.28, while teammate Auri Criddle was seventh at 28.95. Criddle also finished 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.10.

Freshman Monique Rodriguez posted a number of strong finishes, including a sixth-place outing in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.85. In addition, Rodriguez was 13th in the 100-meter dash at 14.18 and 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.0. Rikki Hamilton placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 59.27 and was seventh in the triple jump at 27-2.50. She was 18th in the long jump with a leap of 11-5, while teammate Taylor LaTray placed 11th in the 200 meters in a time of 29.59.

On the boys side, Cody Andersen led the Buckaroos with a second-place finish in the discus at 132-11 and was third in the shot put with a throw of 42-8. Teammate Sergio Castaneda was fourth in the discus and shot put with tosses of 110-10.75 and 39-0, respectively.

Kevin Boyle placed fourth in the high jump as he cleared 5-8 and also finished fourth in the pole vault at 10-6. Matt Jones finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.50 and was eighth in the pole vault at 10-0. Teammate Michael Billingsley finished ninth in the pole vault after jumping 9-6.

Hayden Jeppsen placed fifth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:02. Morgan Dougherty and Mikey Shafer were ninth and 11th in the 800 meters with times of 2:25 and 2:26, respectively. Dougherty also finished 12th in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5.11. Jeremiah Teichert was 11th in the pole vault at 8-6 and 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 33-9. Chris Tyree and Nathan Andrews were 10th and 13th in the 400 meters in times of 60.65 and 66.37. Robert Stepper placed 12th in the long jump at 16-10, Sterling Dennis finished 14th in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.69 and Colton Irons was 14th in the 800 meters at 2:30.

Lowry is off this weekend and hosts the Tri-County Invitational on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The squads will be split once again on Saturday, April 21, with the Dayton Invitational and Carson Invitational.
