Lowry track and field team qualifies handful of athletes for upcoming state meet

The Lowry High School track and field team will be sending a handful of its members to the NIAA State Championships that begin Friday at Carson High School in Carson City.

Rachel Sigurdson and Kenadee Jeppsen paced the Lady Bucks with runner-up finishes. Sigurdson, a senior, was second in the pole vault at 9 feet. Elko's Vivian Neff took home first place, clearing 10-0. Sigurdson added a sixth-place finish in the high jump at 4-6.

Jeppsen, a freshman, placed second in the high jump as she cleared the bar at 4-10. Truckee's Heather Pendleton was the winner with a mark of 4-10. Jeppsen placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 30-5.75 and was 17th in the long jump at 12-8.50.

Fellow freshman Madison Montero qualified for the state championships with a third-place finish in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at 8-6.

The Lady Bucks will take a pair of relay teams to Carson City as well. The 4x100 relay of Auri Criddle, Audrey Snow, Montero and Monique Rodriguez were second in a time of 51.85, which was .20 seconds behind the winning time of Elko. The 4x200 relay of Jillian Albright, Criddle, Meg Montero and Rodriguez were second at 1:48.00. Spring Creek won the race with a time of 1:46.09.

In other finishes, Criddle (17.20) and Rodriguez (17.82) were fifth and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Criddle was just .11 seconds from qualifying for state in the event. Albright placed fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 8-0 and the sophomore was eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.71.

Jasmine Marchand was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 31-1, Dani Ricker finished ninth in the high jump at 4-4 and the junior was 10th in the long jump (13-4.50) and 10th in the triple jump (29-10.25. Hallie Caratzola was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 14-2, Meg Montero finished 11th in the 400 meters at 1:06.46 and Kadie Lynch was 14th in the discus with a throw of 73-10.50.

The Lady Bucks finished fifth as a team with 56.50 points. Truckee claimed the championship with 154.50 points and Spring Creek was second at 134. Elko (106.50) placed third and Churchill County (74) was fourth.

The Buckaroo boys were led by Sergio Castaneda, who qualified for the state championships in the shot put and discus. The senior tossed the discus 141-0.5-, which was a season best by seven feet. He also placed third in the shot put at 46-8, which was also a season best.

Roberto Sanchez will join at the state championships, as he finished third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-2. Dayton's Benji Ply and Elko's Kyrin Allen also jumped 6-2, but finished ahead after the tiebreakers were complete.

Robert Stepper was one place out of qualifying for state, finishing fifth in the high jump at 5-10. Jared Carrica placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 44-5.50 and the sophomore was seventh in the discus at 131-1.25. Drake Kavanaugh was ninth in the discus with a throw of 125-5 and he was 15th in the shot out at 38-2. Steven Cholico placed 16th in the discus at 96-10.

Jeremiah Teichert was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.46 and the senior was 12th in the pole vault at 9-6. Brandon Dowd was 12th in the pole vault with a mark of 9-6 and Zach White was 15th in the pole vault at 8-6. Isaac Ramos (29-1.50) and Blake Hillyer (26-9) were 16th and 17th, respectively, in the triple jump.

Hayden Jeppsen finished 12th in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:00, Kelvin Meza was 15th in the 400 meters at 55.12 and Kobe Fitzpatrick was 20th in the 800 meters in a time of 2:19.41.

The Buckaroo boys were eighth with 32.50 points. The championship came down to a three-team race. Elko beat Dayton by two points (148-146) for the title and Churchill County was third at 143. Spring Creek (74.50) and Fernley (53) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The state championships get underway Friday at 3 p.m. and continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
