Lowry swimmers sweep duals from Bishop Manogue, Churchill County Bucks travel to Reno for Zephyr League championships

WINNEMUCCA - It wasn't quite the day the Lowry High School swim team was expecting, but after all was said and done the squad will take the results of its final Zephyr League duals in Reno last Saturday.

The Buckaroos were expecting to swim against a tough Churchill County team but that did not happen as a number of Greenwave swimmers missed the meet because of prom. Due to that fact, Lowry swept the dual, with the boys winning 133-60 and the girls 136-85.

What Lowry did not know is that it was also swimming against Bishop Manogue and didn't find that out at the meet that was running over 75 minutes late. That did not bother the Buckaroos, with the boys winning 137-60 and the Lady Bucks 137-123.

"It was just one of those days," said LHS head coach Mike Owens. "Our schedule had us swimming against Fallon but when we get there we were told you are also swimming against Manogue. Fallon was missing a bunch of kids but Manogue is a whole different beast. They are a decent team but we came out and beat them. The meet was late and we are sitting outside for over an hour, while other teams are swimming. It's hard to get back focused after doing that, but we were able to do that. Everything worked out and I was happy with our performance."

Johanna Christensen swept both of her individual races, as she won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1 minute, 6.21 seconds, and the 50-yard freestyle at 25.66. Her time is just .11 seconds off what she swam at the regional finals a year ago.

"Her time in the 50 should put her in the top heat at the regional," Owens said. "She fell just short at state last year, but she is looking to qualify this year."

Tori Echeverria took home the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:37.60. She posted a time of 1:03.60 in the 100-yard freestyle, which was good for second versus Churchill County and third in the Bishop Manogue dual.

Trish Bates took off nearly four seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke to win with a time of 1:18. The senior was third in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:33.23 in both duals.

Olivia Snow placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:25.91 and was third in the 50-yard freestyle against Bishop Manogue and fourth in the Churchill County dual at 29.47. Kinzie McClintick finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in both duals and was third overall in a time of 1:18.30. The senior was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle against Manogue and fifth versus Churchill County at 29.58.

Becky Barber slashed 25 seconds off her time in the 500-yard freestyle to finish second in both duals and third overall with a time of 7:08.58. The senior continued her good day by cutting nearly seven seconds off her 200-yard freestyle time to be fourth in both duals and sixth overall at 2:43.90.

"She had a very good meet," added the coach. "That is pretty impressive to take the time off like that. I am hoping she can qualify for the 500 this weekend."

Jessica Jensen, who was swimming the 500-yard freestyle for the first time, was third in each dual and fourth overall with a time of 7:16.81. That time was a minute less than she swam the day before in practice.

Freshmen Emma Kracaw and Cecily Snow were third and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle against Churchill County and fifth and sixth versus Bishop Manogue, with times of 1:11.38 and 1:11.64, respectively. In addition, Snow was ninth overall in the 50-yard freestyle at 31.23. Sabrina Jensen and Christie Kloeppel finished second and third in the 100-yard backstroke versus Bishop Manogue and fourth and fifth against Churchill County with times of 1:22.65 and 1:37.61. Rachel French placed fourth in both duals and fifth overall in the 500-yard freestyle at 7:41.56.

One of the best races of the day was the girls 200-yard individual medley relay where Bishop Manogue beat out Lowry's Christensen, Bates, McClintick and Echeverria by .15 seconds (2:06.10-2:06.15). The time was good enough for the Lady Bucks to win the relay over Churchill County.

"It was a tight race and I could not tell who won," Owens said. "There are a couple of things I would do different."

Echeverria, Olivia Snow, Bates and Christensen ran away with the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:54.05, while Kloeppel, Xana Childs, French and Kracaw won the 400-yard freestyle against Churchill with a time of 5:41.45 and was second to Bishop Manogue.

Michael Drake was one of many to lead the boys charge, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.79 and the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:11.58. Dain Maher garnered a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:18.84 and recorded a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:36.29.

Teammate Joe Schmidt won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:36.25. In addition, Schmidt placed third in the 50-yard freestyle against Bishop Manogue and fifth versus Churchill County in a time of 28.47. Jessie Pate won the 100-yard butterfly in the dual against Churchill County in a time of 1:09.51 and was second in the Bishop Manogue dual. The senior went on to place second in the 50-yard freestyle versus Bishop Manogue at 25.09 and was third in the Churchill County dual.

Jeremiah Maestrejuan and Trystan Blouir led a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle against Churchill County with times of 7:38.29 and 7:49.62, respectively. The duo was second and third against Bishop Manogue.

Matthew Ruehl placed second in the 100-yard freestyle and was third overall with a time of 1:05.48. The junior finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke against Churchill County in a time of 1:21.53 and was third in the event versus Bishop Manogue. AJ Jackson posted a second-place outing in the 200-yard individual medley in both duals and was third overall at 2:54.64.

Wyatt Lester finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:05.61, taking nearly six seconds off his previous best time and was fourth overall. Leo Avila placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle against Bishop Manogue at 28.82. The freshman was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:07.62.

Jiovanni Madrid and Tristen Waller finished fifth and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle against Churchill County with times of 1:11.99 and 1:16.39.

The 200-yard medley relay of Drake, Ruehl, Pate and Schmidt won with a time of 2:00.92, while Pate, Schmidt, Avila and Drake won the 200-yard freestyle relay over Bishop Manogue but was second to Churchill County at 1:48.07. Lester, Dusty Thiede, Greg Forney and Waller paced the field in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 4:44.76.

Lowry travels to Reno on Saturday for the Zephyr League Championships at 2 p.m.
