Lowry swimmers split dual with Churchill County

Bucks compete at Aqua 5 in Carson City

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School swim team found mixed results in its dual meet with Churchill County in Reno on Friday, March 22.

The Buckaroos boys notched a 133-60 win over the Greenwave and improved to 2-0 in the Zephyr League, while the Lady Bucks lost their dual 133-100 and are now 1-1.

"We had a pretty good meet," said LHS head coach Mike Owens. "The boys swam well and turned in some good performances. I have to give credit to Churchill County - they had an awesome girls team."

Dain Maher, Leo Avilla, Wyatt Lester and Matthew Ruehl all won individual events for the Lowry boys.

Maher won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 35.62 seconds to go with a second-place outing in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:13.78.

Avilla was tops in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:01.75 and was second in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.44. Wyatt Lester led a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:55.64. J.R. Perkinson was second at 8:24.13. Lester added a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 28.82. Perkinson was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle at 29.09.

Ruehl took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.02 and placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle at 28.95. Matthew Jock was second and sixth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:11.59 and the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 29.53.

Tristen Waller continued his strong start to the season, finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.67 and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 30.18.

"Tristen was my boys swimmer of the week," added the coach. "He is just surprising me week after week. It is night and day from last year to now. He took nearly 40 seconds off his breaststroke time. It is unbelievable right now. I think he just has a lot more confidence right now and he is a lot stronger. He is already qualified for the regional."

Trystan Blouir swam to a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:40.10 and was third in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:40.00.

Jeremiah Maestrejuan placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 3:16.39 and the senior placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle at 33.94.

Bradley Schmidt and Nathan Hales finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:21.69 and 1:18.72. Ian Maher and Chris Franco placed 11th and 12th in the 50-yard freestyle.

All three relay teams for the boys won their respective races. The foursome of Maher, Maestrejuan, Ruehl and Avila won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:13.68.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Ruehl, Waller, Perkinson and Jock won the race by five seconds with a time of 1:58.84. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Perkinson, Waller, Blouir and Lester won in a time of 4:44.60.

Tori Echeverria, Karen Esparza and Kelsea Perkinson won individual events for the Lady Bucks. Echeverria claimed two victories in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.96 and the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:11.38.

"Tori is swimming well right now for us," Owens said. "She keeps on doing good things for us."

Esparza led the way in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 2:32.71, while teammate Rachel French was third in the same race at 8:24.87.

Perkinson timed in at 1:25.90 in the 100-yard breaststroke to win, while finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle at 30.24.

Emma Kracaw and Sabrina Jensen were third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, with times of 2:38.50 and 2:42.47, respectively. Jensen added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:12.37 and Kracaw was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 31.17.

Jessica Jensen placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:14.28 and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle at 33.87. Cheyanna Furance, Abby Flores, Abbie Whitaker, Melissa Cervantes, Xana Childs and Kailynn Yetter finished fifth through 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Jessica Jensen, Kelsea Perkinson, Katlyn Barnes and Echeverria won with a time of 2:08.25, while Kracaw, Kelsea Perkinson, Echeverria and Barnes were second in the 200-yard medley at 2:19.88. French, Flores, Whitaker and Sabrina Jensen were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 5:35.68.

"I am proud of the entire team," Owens said. "A bunch of the kids are consistently taking off times in their races. They are only going to get better. I really like the team camaraderie."

The Buckaroos traveled to Carson City on Saturday for an Aqua 5 meet. Participants compete in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. The athlete with the best combined time in all five events is named the overall winner.

Echeverria had the best finish for Lowry, placing 10th with a combined time of 5:25.07. The senior timed in at 28.44 in the 50 freestyle, 1:13.13 in the 100 butterfly, 1:03.90 in the 100 freestyle, 1:12.53 in the 100 backstroke and 1:27.40 in the 100 breaststroke.

She was the only Lady Buckaroo to record a time in each of the five events.

Ruehl finished 16th for the Buckaroo boys and had a combined time of 5:45.91. He timed in at 29.58 in the 50 freestyle, 1:17.56 in the 100 butterfly, 1:07.23 in the 100 freestyle, 1:30.08 in the 100 backstroke and 1:20.74 in the 100 breaststroke.

Lowry travels to Truckee on Friday to swim against South Tahoe at 2 p.m.
