Lowry swimmers close out Zephyr League slate at Truckee

Buckaroos produce 33 career-best times

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School swim team made its third trip to Lake Tahoe this spring, as it finished up its Zephyr League schedule at Truckee on Friday, April 26.

The Wolverines swept the dual over the Buckaroos but Lowry did turn in 33 career-best times.

"Truckee is a tough team with very few seniors," said LHS head coach Mike Owens. "We had some new best times recorded at the meet, which is always good at this point in the season.

Cherice Armstrong swam to a career-best time in the 200-yard freestyle, shaving 1.2 seconds off her previous best. The junior also took a half a second off her 100-yard freestyle time.

Eva Mercado, a four year swimmer for the Lady Bucks, swam the tough 200-yard individual medley in 3 minutes, 10.40 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:34.69. She also swam the backstroke leg of the medley relay.

"Eva has been a joy to work with for the last four years and she will be missed in the pool next year," Owens said.

Fellow senior Tori Echeverria swam in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 28.53, which was good for second place.

"She had been under the weather all week but swam through it to help score points for the team," added the coach.

Sabrina Jensen notched career-best times in both the 50-yard freestyle at 31.76 and the 100-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:09.72.

Freshman Taylor Billows took three seconds off her 50-yard freestyle and eight seconds off her 100-yard freestyle time. The coach added that those were excellent results for Billows at this time of the year.

Yesinia Herrera, also a freshman, knocked off 1.5 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and two seconds off her previous best in the 100-yard freestyle. Shailey Lara chopped off 17 seconds off her 100-yard freestyle and finished at1:38.06.

Abby Flores timed in at 43.53 in the 50-yard freestyle, which was a second better than her previous best. She took off seven seconds in the 100-yard freestyle to time in at 1:39.14. Cheyanna Furnare had a recorded a career-best time in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:17.44, taking off five seconds. The freshman took off another five seconds in the 100-yard backstroke to finish at 1:33.01.

Freshman Kelsea Perkinson took off three seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, her fourth with a time of 1:10.15. She placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:27.21.

Abbey Whitaker swam the tough 500-yard freestyle in a time of 9:05.52 and Jessica Jensen also swam the 500-yard freestyle and finished third at 7:30.09.

Alexandria Ziemer, who was named the swimmer of the week for the girls, took off 15 seconds off her previous best in the 100-yard freestyle to finish at 1:30.95. The freshman erased 17 seconds in her 100-yard backstroke time at 1:44.76.

The Buckaroo boys had a number of new career-best times as well, including Jiovanni Madrid, who took off one second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:30.82.

Ian Maher had a new best time of 32.72 in the 50-yard freestyle, taking off six seconds and the freshman chopped off seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and finished at 1:22.71. JR Perkinson took off .36 seconds in his 50-yard freestyle and three seconds in the 100-yard freestyle for career-best time of 1:09.03.

Dane Maher took off a second in the 100-yard freestyle to time in at 1:03.32, while Matt Ruehl posted a career-best time of 1:14.76 in the 100-yard butterfly, which he took three seconds off his previous best mark.

The coach added that Matthew Jock is coming on strong, with career-best times in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.96 and the 100-yard freestyle at 1:04.89.

Jacob Hales, who was the boys swimmer of the week, swam a great 50-yard freestyle, according to the coach. Hales took 1.27 seconds off his previous best at 31.00 and 17 seconds in the 100-yard back stroke at 1:32.27.

"That is an amazing accomplishment for this time of the year," Owens said of all the career-best time. "With that type of improvement of this young of a team, I look forward to the coming years."
