Lowry swimmers close out regular season in South Tahoe

Buckaroos travel to Carson City for regional championships

The last time the Lowry High School swim team swam in a league dual was way back in the second week of April. From then until last week, the Buckaroos were either off or swimming in the Northern Nevada Championships.

Lowry traveled to South Tahoe on May 9 to wrap its regular season against the Vikings. The Lady Bucks suffered their first defeat of the year, losing 153.50-97.50. The Lowry boys lost for just the second time, 133-117.

"I knew it was going to be tough going up there," said LHS coach Mike Owens. "You have to deal with the elevation change and South Tahoe has some good swimmers. It turned out to be an eye-opener for us."

On the boys side, Matthew Jock was first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 18.53 seconds, which was five seconds quicker than his seed time. The junior was second in the 50-yard freestyle at 24.84, which was nearly two seconds quicker than his seed time.

Leo Avila claimed the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:00.46 and he was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.05. Christian Gray placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:14.43 and earned a second runner-up finish at 2:41.20.

Tristen Waller posted a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:46.71, which was nearly 40 seconds better than his seed time. The junior added a third-place outing in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:03.52.

Marcus Molina was second in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:01.66, which was eight seconds better than his seed time. The senior was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.23. Liam Walls (1:05.36) and Wyatt Lester (1:12.56) were second and third in the 100-yard butterfly. Walls took nearly 26 seconds off his seed time. Walls and Lester were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle.

Nathan Hales took seven seconds off his seed time in the 200-yard freestyle to finish fourth at 2:51.85 and was seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.35. JR Perkinson was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley at 3:10.27, which was eight seconds better than his seed time and he was 10th in the 50-yard freestyle at 28.13.

The 200-yard individual medley relay of Gray, Lester, Jock and Avila were first with a time of 1:42.13 as was the 400-yards freestyle of Jock, Molina, Walls and Waller took 16 seconds off to finish at 4:12.83.

Madison Lozano paced the Lady Bucks with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:18.39. The freshman was second in the 100-yard freestyle, taking of three seconds from her seed time at 1:03.24. Kenzie Maddox was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.66, which was .41 off the winning time. The senior tied for third in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:05.03.

Sophomore Kelsea Perkinson placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:57.14, which 23 seconds better than her seed time. In addition, Perkinson was third in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:22.56. Sabrina Jensen (7:07.65) and Rebekah Goldblatt (8:35.16) were second and third, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. Jensen was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:35.89.

Emma Kracaw finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:30.89 and she was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle at 30.67. Cecily Snow stopped the clock at 30.00 to finish fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and the junior was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle at 1L10.16, which as 19 seconds better than her seed time.

Cheyanna Furnare was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:40.58 and she was eighth in the 50-yard freestyle at 33.03. Katlyn Barnes placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle at 31.36 and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:14.96.

The girls 400-yard freestyle relay of Perkinson, Jensen, Lozano and Kracaw were first with a time of 4:34.97 and the 200-yard freestyle relay of Lozano, Maddox, Kracaw and Perkinson won by seven seconds with a time of 1:58.44.

Lowry travels to Carson City on Friday and Saturday for the Division I-A North Regional Championships. Action gets underway at the Carson Aquatic Facility at 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The four placers in the individual events and relays advance to the NIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 24 on the campus of UNLV.
