The Lowry High School softball team headed to southern Nevada this past weekend and opened its season on a high note at the Desert Winds Classic in Mesquite.
The Lady Bucks went 3-1 over the three-day tournament, beginning with an 18-0 win on Thursday over host Virgin Valley. Lowry scored eight runs in the second inning and combined for 10 more in the third and fourth innings for the easy victory.
The tournament started its bracket format on Friday and the Lady Bucks picked up a tough first-round draw with Foothill.
The Falcons won the Division I South Sunrise championship last year and played in the state tournament. Foothill won the game 11-0 and went on to win the tournament championship in come-from-behind fashion over Arbor View.
Lowry bounced back from the loss and beat Moapa Valley 11-0 later in the day on Friday.
In their final game of the tournament, the Lady Bucks knocked off Cheyenne 12-2 on Saturday morning. Cheyenne scored once in the first inning, but it was all Lowry after that.
In its three wins, the Lady Bucks outscored their opponent 41-2.
Lowry opens Division I-A North play this weekend in Sparks. The two schools play once on Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Lady Bucks make their home debut on Friday, March 20, and Saturday, March 21, against Elko. Game times are 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday's doubleheader starts at 11 a.m.
The Indians picked up two wins in mesquite, beating Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley.
