WINNEMUCCA - With the Thanksgiving holiday over, the high school sports season gets back in action this weekend for Lowry and McDermitt high schools.
The Buckaroo basketball teams will be hosting the Lowry Invitational beginning Thursday and running through Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center and Lowry High School.
The boys tournament is a round-robin format, with Lowry opening against Virgin Valley on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Winnemucca Event Center. The Buckaroos will face Carson on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and North Tahoe on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., also at the Winnemucca Event Center.
The girls tournament features 10 teams and will be played at both venues. The Lady Bucks open with Owyhee on Thursday at noon at the Winnemucca Event Center. Other Thursday games include Douglas vs. Fernley (3:30 p.m., Event Center), Wooster vs. Damonte Ranch (4:30 p.m., LHS), South Tahoe vs. Churchill County (4:30 p.m. Event Center), Hug vs. Douglas/Fernley winner (6 p.m. LHS) and Dayton vs. Lowry/Owyhee winner (6 p.m. Event Center).
The championship game is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Winnemucca Event Center.
The Lowry JV boys will play one game in the invitational on Thursday against Owyhee at 1:30 p.m. From there the Buckaroos will move on to Lovelock on Friday and Saturday to play in the Pershing County tournament. The Buckaroos play Fernley at 3 p.m. on Friday. Lowry faces Yerington at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Pershing County at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Lowry JV girls will also be in Lovelock for the weekend, playing Fernley on Friday at 4 p.m. The Lady Bucks play twice on Saturday, opening with Yerington at 2 p.m. and concluding with Pershing County at 4 p.m.
The Lowry wrestling team begins its quest for a fifth consecutive state championship on Saturday at the Capital City Duals in Carson City.
The McDermitt High School boys and girls basketball teams open their season on Friday when they host Jordan Valley, Ore. The girls game tips off at 3:30 p.m., followed by the boys.
