WINNEMUCCA -The final two weeks of the high school sports season get underway Friday and Saturday for Lowry and McDermitt high schools.

Winnemucca will be a busy place on Friday and Saturday as the Buckaroo baseball and softball teams will host the Division I-A North Regional Championships. The tournaments are a NIAA event and admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children (eight and younger) and senior citizens are free.

The Lowry baseball team will play Churchill County at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in one of the two semifinals. The Buckaroos made their way into the second round of the playoffs with a 5-4 victory over Sparks in eight innings this past Friday in Winnemucca. With two outs, Aaron Nelson drove home Tytin Johnson with a walk-off double for the game-winning run.

Elko will face Truckee in the opening game of the tournament at 9 a.m. The winner of the two morning games on Friday will play at 4:30 p.m. later in the day, while the two losers play at 2 p.m. in an elimination matchup.

A second elimination game will be played at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while the championship is set for 12:30 p.m. A second championship game, if needed, will follow.

The top two teams from the regional tournament advance to the NIAA State Baseball Championships, which will take place at the College of Southern Nevada from May 16 - 18.

The Lowry softball team will take on Churchill County in the opening round of its regional tournament at noon on Friday. Fernley, the top seed in the regional, will face Elko at 10 a.m.

The Lady Bucks advanced to the second round of the playoffs, after sweeping Dayton 10-0 and 2-0 this past Friday in Winnemucca. Lowry's Jordan Mecham had 20 strikeouts and no walks in the doubleheader sweep.

The winner's bracket game will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, while the elimination game will be at 2 p.m. A second elimination game will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the championship set for noon. If needed, a second title game will be played.

The top two teams from the regional tournament advance to the NIAA State Softball Championships, which will take place at Eller Media Stadium on the campus of UNLV from May 16 - 18.

The Lowry track and field team travels to Yerington on Friday and Saturday for the Division I-A North Regional Championships. Action is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The top four placers in each respective event advance to the NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Silverado High School in Las Vegas on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18.

The Lowry swim team is in Carson City for the Division I-A North Regional Championships on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.

The top four individual finishers and the top four relay teams per event advance to the NIAA Division I-A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, May 18, in Carson City.

The Lowry boys golf team travels to Truckee on Thursday to close out its regular season. There is no postseason tournament in the Division I-A North and state tournament bids are based on the final regular season standings in the league.

The Buckaroos, Elko and Spring Creek have clinched the three transfer spots to the NIAA Division I-A Golf Championships to be played at Sierra Sage Golf Course in Reno on Tuesday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 15. Tee times will be announced after the final regular season meet in the north is played, as well as the Division I-A South championship is completed. Lowry is looking to win its second consecutive state championship and third in four years.

The McDermitt track and field team travels to Yerington on Friday and Saturday for the Division IV North Regional Championships. Action is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
