Lowry, McDermitt fall sports teams prepare for playoffs

WINNEMUCCA - The regular season for the fall sports teams in Humboldt County has come to an end and three Lowry High School squads and the McDermitt volleyball team are preparing for the playoffs.

The Buckaroo football team, which finished second in the Division I-A North at 8-1, will host their second playoff game since 1992 on Friday, when Churchill County comes to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Lowry beat Churchill County 21-7, last Thursday in Winnemucca to gain the home field advantage.

If the Buckaroos win, they will advance to the state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.

Fernley visits Truckee in the other Division I-A North matchup, while Moapa Valley hosts Mojave and Boulder City travels to Cheyenne in the Southern Division I-A games.

The Lowry boys soccer team travels to South Tahoe on Wednesday to face the Vikings in the opening round of the Division I-A North playoffs. The teams played twice this year, with South Tahoe winning both times. In the second meeting, the Buckaroos led 3-1 at halftime, before the Vikings came back for the 5-1 victory.

If Lowry wins, it will play the winner of the Elko/Sparks match on Friday at 3 p.m. in Elko. The semifinals and finals of the regional will be played in Elko on Friday and Saturday.

The Lowry girls soccer team is headed east to play rival Elko in the first round of the NIAA Division I-A playoffs. They will play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner of that match will play the victor of Spring Creek and Churchill County at 1 p.m. in Elko on Friday. Just like the boys the semifinals and finals are Friday and Saturday in Elko.

The McDermitt High School volleyball team takes the No. 1 seed from the Division IV East, into this weekend's regional tournament in Spring Creek.

The Lady Bulldogs face Mineral County, the No. 4 seed from the Division IV West, at 6:20 p.m. on Friday. The semifinals will take place at 10 a.m. and 11:40 a.m., respectively, on Saturday, with the championship at 2 p.m.

The top two teams advance to the NIAA Division IV State Tournament in Reno on Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10.
