WINNEMUCCA - With a full contingent of grapplers, the Lowry High School junior varsity wrestling team made the trip, along with its varsity counterparts, to the Stockmen's Invitational in Fallon this past weekend.
The Buckaroos went 4-2 on the weekend, defeating Spanish Springs II 36-34, Silver Stage 78-6, Reno 60-24 and Churchill County. The only losses suffered by the Buckaroos were 48-35 to North Valleys and 40-39 to Fernley.
"The JV kids did a pretty good job," said LHS head coach John Brooks. "We had an injury on the varsity side and had to bring up Trase (Bell) from the JV team. We probably could have beaten Fernley if Trase was still in the lineup. It is good for those kids to get time on the mat."
Bell, Tyler Benson, Mikea Somers and Tytin Johnson all went undefeated for the Buckaroos. Kirk Berentsen and Tristen Waller went 5-1 over the weekend and Chris Karchella was 3-1.
Blake Duncan, Blake Hillyer, Donald LeGrande, Shaun Mentaberry, Kelvin Meza, Nate Nelson, Cameron Okuma and
Michael Venzor all saw action for Lowry.
"If anything happened to one of our varsity guys, we will need one of these guys to step up for us," Brooks said. "We gave away a few matches that we probably should have won. We just have to be a little smarter at times."
Lowry travels to Lovelock on Saturday for the Mustang Invitational.
