WINNEMUCCA - The future of the Lowry High School volleyball team looks bright as the junior varsity squad started its season in style, winning a one-day tournament last Saturday in Truckee.
Lowry opened up with Dayton and lost the first game of the match 25-21, but rebounded well, winning game two 25-7 and the third 15-8.
"There were a lot of nerves in that first set and balls were going all over the place," said LHS head coach Megan Allen. "Once we got into the second set we began to settle down and play. They were in a big gym and it was a different environment. This was the first time that the freshmen, who have played a lot of club ball, got to play with the returning junior varsity girls. It was a new experience and by the end of the day, they were playing well together."
Lowry went on to beat Truckee and Damonte Ranch to get into the championship. The Wolverines' varsity team has won the last two Division I-A state championships and the Mustangs, out of Reno, are a Division I school. In the championship match, the Lady Bucks knocked off Churchill County.
"It was a fun day for us," Allen said. "We played some pretty good teams. Those are all solid programs. The girls really rose up and were consistent. We served the ball well and our passing improved tremendously throughout the day."
The Lady Bucks will be part of the State Farm Invitational that begins today and concludes Saturday at Lowry High School. The tournament features 11 other varsity teams. The Lady Bucks face Battle Mountain today at 12:30 p.m., followed by matches with Spring Creek at 4:15 p.m. and Dayton at 5:30 p.m.
"It is a good way for us to start, leading into this weekend," Allen said. "It will be a challenge for us but I think we will do good. We are just looking to compete against the varsity teams. We have some pretty good size. We are taller than some varsity teams. We have been working on defense all week. Hopefully we can use that size to our advantage and get some blocks up against the hitters on the other teams."
