WINNEMUCCA - Fans had to be left shaking their heads after the Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team defeated Elko 25-12, 21-25 and 15-1 on Tuesday night in Winnemucca.
The Lady Bucks (7-0 Division I-A North, 11-1 overall) dominated the first and third sets, but could not get anything going in the second set against the Indians.
"I am still trying to figure out what happened," said LHS head coach Cassie Jenkins. "I was wondering what happened to my girls and where they went in that second game. Fortunately, they came back in the third set."
With the first set tied at 2-2, Hannah Hillyer began an 11-1 run with a kill, which also featured a tip by Kaity Sample, a block by Madison Lozano, a kill by Ashlee Barron and an ace by Hillyer.
The Indians cut the deficit to 11-5 but got no closer as the Lady Bucks slowly pulled away. An ace by Brooklyn Waller pushed the advantage back to eight points at 19-7, and Lowry used two kills by Hillyer and a kill by Sample to close out the set.
The Lady Bucks scored three of the first four points of the second set, led by an opening ace by Waller. However, the Indians countered with an 8-1 run and maintained the lead for the rest of the set. Madison Montero had two kills and an ace and Chelsea Herrera and Alanna Miller contributed a kill and ace, respectively, to close the gap to 11-10 but Lowry got no closer.
Elko had set point at 24-16, only to see Lowry fire back with five consecutive points to close the gap to three points. Sample, Montero and Herrera had an ace and kills, respectively, in the run that fell just short.
The Lady Bucks won the coin toss for the serve in the third set and it was all over when Waller took to the service line and served 13 consecutive points. The freshman had three aces in the run, but also had help from her teammates. Hillyer had three kills and Barron a block. Barron closed out the match with an ace.
"That was pretty impressive by Brooklyn," Jenkins said. "I thought she might serve the entire set out. It was good for us to come back and dominate that final game."
Montero had eight digs, four kills and two aces for the Lady Bucks and Hillyer added four kills, two blocks and one ace. Barron finished with seven digs, three kills and two aces, Waller added eight assists and five aces, Sample three assists and two kills and Herrera and Megan Lozano had two kills and one block, respectively.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek on Saturday for a noon match against the Spartans. The Lady Bucks travel to South Tahoe on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. start and are back on the road Thursday to play Dayton at 4 p.m.
