WINNEMUCCA - The wins keep on coming for the Lowry High School junior varsity volleyball team.
The Lady Bucks swept a pair of matches last week - one on the road and another on their home floor.
Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 16, and beat the Spartans 25-14 and 25-13. Two days later the Lady Bucks were back home and beat Battle Mountain 25-17 and 25-12.
Lowry started slowly against Battle Mountain as the Longhorns scored the first four points of the first set. The Lady Bucks' Meg Montero ended the spurt with a kill.
"We had to change our lineup a bit with Darion (Iturriaga) not in it," said LHS head coach Megan Allen. "We started off a little slow, but Carly (Bell) filled in at the libero position and did a great job. She served well and did a good job of passing."
Kills by Payton Naveran and Montero brought Lowry within a point at 8-7, when Battle Mountain answered with four consecutive points to stretch its lead out to five points. The Lady Bucks responded with four straight points, including a kill and ace by Naveran to make the score 12-11.
Lowry reeled off six consecutive points, breaking a 15-15 tie, which was capped off by a block by Naveran. Auri Criddle picked up a block late in the first set, helping the Lady Bucks end the set on a 10-2 run.
Lowry (18-7 overall, 7-2 Division I-A, 6-1 Ruby Mountain) fed off the momentum and scored the first five points of the second set.
The Lady Bucks maintained a six-point advantage at 11-5, when Naveran stepped up to the service line. The freshman ended all the hopes for the Longhorns as she served nine consecutive points, including five aces to put the Lady Bucks up 20-5. Kelsea Perkinson also had a kill during the run.
Jasmyne Herrera added a pair of kills late in the match to stop a late Battle Mountain run.
"The nice thing about this team is the girls can play different spots on the floor," Allen said. "The best thing about this team is everyone contributes and it is team before anything else."
Naveran finished with six aces, three kills and three blocks and Herrera and Montero each had two kills. Criddle had three blocks and Chelsea Herrera had one block. Lindsay Pate finished with four digs, Sierra Thiede and Bell had three and two digs, respectively. Jillian Albright led the team with three assists.
Earlier in the week, Lowry completed the season sweep of Spring Creek with two easy wins by double figures.
The Lady Bucks had nine aces on the night, including three by Albright. In addition, the freshman had six assists and four digs. Naveran and Criddle each had two kills and Bell and Montero finished with four and three digs, respectively.
Lowry hosts Elko tonight at 5 p.m. The Indians defeated the Lady Bucks just a couple of weeks ago. The Lady Bucks will wear pink uniforms as part of "Pack the House Pink" night. The volleyball teams are wearing the uniforms to promote breast cancer awareness. T-shirts will also be available for sale at the match.
"We are ready for Elko and it should be a great match," Allen said. "I expect it to go three games. We are looking avenge the loss from a couple of weeks ago."
