Lowry JV softball team runs winning streak to 20 Lady Bucks sweep Wells in home doubleheader

WINNEMUCCA - It wasn't just another doubleheader for the Lowry High School junior varsity softball team Wednesday afternoon in Winnemucca against Wells.

The Leopards were one of two schools to beat the Lady Bucks a season ago, and the Lady Bucks were looking for a bit of revenge. Lowry did just that, sweeping a doubleheader 10-0 and 12-2 from Wells to improve to 20-0 on the season.

"Those were two good wins for us," said LHS head coach Katy Schwartz. "We were hitting the crap out of the ball. I don't remember how many times we hit it off the fence, but I kind of liked that feeling. I have nothing to complain about right now. Like always we are hitting the ball well, our pitchers are throwing strong and we are playing good defense."

The Lady Bucks picked up all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Jaecee Munger that cleared the center-field fence and also scoring Taylor Schwartz. Alyssa Jones kicked off a four-run third inning with a lead-off single, eventually scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Munger. Alyssa Dendary and Lexie Coleman each had hits that drove in runs. For Coleman it was the start of three consecutive doubles in the opener. Her last double, in the sixth inning, proved to be the finale as she drove home Schwartz, ending the game by the 10-run rule.

The Lady Bucks added two runs in the fourth inning off a double by Kylee McClellan and a triple by Schwartz. Coleman led Lowry with three hits and Schwartz picked up two.

While Lowry was dominant at the plate, McClellan was just as good in the circle as she allowed just one bloop single behind first base in five innings of work. The freshman struck out five and walked one.

Following a scoreless first inning in the nightcap, Lowry put up eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. The first four batters of the inning (Munger, Dendary, Coleman and McKenzie Moore) reached base and scored. The Lady Bucks did the rest of their damage with two outs, as they put four more runs up on the board to build an 8-0 advantage. Jorden Raynor and Munger each doubled, contributing to the final three runs of the inning. McClellan also had a two-RBI double as part of the big inning.

Lowry used an RBI-double from McClellan to score Jones in the third inning, followed by a RBI-single by Allison Barron to build a 10-0 lead. Wells scored its first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning on single, but the Lady Bucks quickly got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth.

The Leopards rallied in the top of the fifth inning for a single run but watched as the game came to an end when Coleman threw out Ericka Pengelly at second base, with Dendary applying the tag for the final out.

"That was a nice way to end the game and we had two double plays today," Schwartz said. "That is a team we wanted to beat and now we got revenge on both teams that beat us last year. I am a happy girl right now. Everything seems to be clicking."

Schwartz earned the win for Lowry in the second game, as she went the distance and allowed two runs on four hits. She struck out seven and walked three. McClellan had three hits to pace the Lady Bucks.

Lowry was on the road on April 12 in Carlin and swept a doubleheader from the Carlin JV, winning 17-0 and 25-0. In four games this year against the Railroaders, the Lady Bucks have outscored them 95-0. Lowry has outscored all of its opponents 317-37.

In game one, Schwartz gave up just two hits, while striking out 13 batters. Lowry scored seven runs in the third inning and closed out the game with five more in the fifth. Munger and McClellan each had three hits.

Dendary was just as dominant in the circle in game two. After allowing a lead-off double, the freshman retired the final 15 batters in order. She also had three hits in the game and scored five runs. After a five-run first inning, the Lady Bucks combined to score 16 runs in the second and third innings on their way to the easy win.

Lowry travels to Spring Creek on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Lady Bucks return home to face Pershing County on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Lowry won the first matchup of the season 7-3 in Lovelock.

"We have a rematch with Lovelock and that will be a good test for us," Schwartz said. "They are not a bad team but we didn't play our best last time. I like being undefeated right now and I can't give enough credit to the girls. They do everything we ask of them."
