WINNEMUCCA - The road to perfection for the Lowry High School junior varsity softball team continued this past weekend with two more wins at home.
The Lady Bucks (25-0 overall, 6-0 Ruby Mountain League) continued their domination of opponents by beating White Pine 22-2 on Friday and 7-0 on Saturday for their 25th consecutive victory on the year. Lowry has outscored its opponents 414-46 this season and dating back to last season is undefeated in 36 games, with one tie to the Wells varsity.
"It was tougher going on Saturday but we capitalized on the errors they made and that is how we got our runs and that is what we needed to do," said LHS head coach Katy Schwartz. "Our bats are not always going to be where they need to be and the defense, pitching and base running made up for it."
Lowry had no trouble with its offense on Friday, sending 17 batters to the plate in the first inning and scoring 13 runs on 10 hits. Kylee McClellan, Taylor Schwartz and Alyssa Dendary each had two hits in the opening inning. Dendary's second hit of the frame, which was a double, drove in three runs. Alyssa Jones drove in two runs with a single, Schwartz had three RBIs in the inning with her two hits and Shelby Cupples had a RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
The Lady Bucks tacked on a single run in the second as Jorden Raynor singled home McClellan. Lowry used base hits from Lexie Coleman, Allison Barron and Raynor to score three times in the fourth and closed out its scoring with five runs in the fifth. The Lady Bucks strung together four consecutive hits by Jaecee Munger, Dendary, Coleman and Barron in the fifth but ended any further damage by having runners leave base early to prevent more scoring.
Schwartz allowed just two hits and two runs in her five innings of work in the circle. The sophomore struck out six, including the side in the second and fifth innings, with five walks.
Unlike Friday, Lowry did not have a hit until the fourth inning in Saturday's game, but still manufactured runners in the third to take a 2-0 advantage. With one out, McClellan walked and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jorden Raynor. After back-to-back walks to Schwartz and Munger, Dendary provided the second run with a sacrifice fly to score Raynor.
McKenzie Moore collected the Lady Bucks' first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and she eventually scored. That led to a four-run inning, which also included singles by Raynor and Munger. Following a scoreless fifth inning, Lowry used base hits from Schwartz and Dendary for the final run of the game.
As it turned out Lowry needed just one run in the game, as McClellan dominated White Pine from the circle, allowing just one hit, which came in the fifth on a leadoff single. The freshman struck out six and walked one.
"These games are a lot more fun to play," Schwartz said. "You get frustrated because the bats are not where you want them to be but when everything else is working they are doing what they need to do."
Lowry closes out its season today by hosting Elko in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Lady Bucks swept two games from the Indians early in the season by the scores of 8-3 and 15-1.
"Two more to go to be undefeated and we are always out to get Elko," Schwartz said. "We are looking to get the job done and finish undefeated."
