WINNEMUCCA - The plan for the Lowry High School junior varsity girls basketball team was to play three games at the Pershing County Invitational last weekend in Lovelock.
However, Mother Nature had a different idea, as a snowstorm blew through northern Nevada on Friday night and into Saturday morning, cutting down the number of games for the Lady Bucks by two.
Lowry (1-0) defeated Yerington 48-10 on Friday, Dec. 6, but could not travel back to Lovelock on Saturday morning due to the weather conditions.
"The girls played very well," said LHS head coach Shelly Smith. "I pulled the press off pretty quick and took my starters out early in the first half. The girls got a lot of playing time even though the game was quick with the running clock."
The game was played with two 20-minute running halves, with the Lady Bucks jumping out to a 28-5 lead at halftime. The rout continued in the second half as Lowry continued to build its advantage.
A pair of freshmen led the way for the Lady Bucks, with Tiana Herrera outscoring Yerington by herself with 12 points. She added four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Brooklyn Waller netted 11 point to outscore the entire Lions' squad as well. In addition, Waller had two steals, one block and one assist.
"My freshmen stepped up and played well," Smith said. "Tiana rebounded the ball well to go with her scoring and Brooklyn gave us some good minutes."
Caitlynn Cooper finished with six points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks and Sierra Thiede contributed five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Celeste Esquivel, Hayley Hall and Keslea Perkinson each scored four points and Chelsea Herrera had two points. Hall and Herrera grabbed eight and six rebounds, respectively.
"The girls came out and played hard and that is what I wanted to see," Smith said. "There are things we still need to work on. We missed a bunch of layups and we committed too many turnovers. We have a lot of talent and I have a good group of girls. I think you are going to see a lot of good things from them."
Lowry will play twice on Saturday against Damonte Ranch. The Lady Bucks host the Mustangs at 11 a.m. Lowry will jump back on the floor to play the Damonte Ranch freshmen at 12:30 p.m. The Lady Bucks' freshmen team is in Battle Mountain for a tournament and can't play the game in Winnemucca.
