Lowry JV girls roll through South Tahoe, Dayton

Lady Bucks travel to Lovelock on Tuesday

WINNEMUCCA - There is one undefeated basketball team left in Humboldt County and that honor belongs to the Lowry High School junior varsity girls squad.

The Lady Bucks improved to 6-0 on the season with a pair of Division I-A North wins last weekend on the road. Lowry knocked off South Tahoe 58-26 on Friday, Dec. 20, and Dayton 54-14 this past Saturday.

Sophomore Hayley Hall nearly outscored South Tahoe by herself, netting 20 points to go with eight rebounds and four steals. The Lady Bucks led 17-10 after the first eight minutes of play, but used a stingy defense in the second and third quarters to outscore the Vikings 30-6 to take a 47-16 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Sierra Thiede contributed nine points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist, Celeste Esquivel added seven points, Brooklyn Waller six, Haley Rolando and Maria Hernandez four each and Caitlynn Cooper, Chelsea Herrera, Emalee Brown and Tiana Herrera two each.

Lowry was just as impressive in its win over Dayton, holding the Dust Devils scoreless in the second quarter, while grabbing a 22-4 lead at halftime. Dayton did not score more than six points in any quarter.

The Lady Bucks nearly equaled their first half total in the third quarter, outscoring the Dust Devils 21-3 to lead 43-8. The rout continued into the fourth quarter with the game eventually being played with a running clock due to the NIAA 40-point mercy rule.

Eleven different players scored for Lowry, with Waller leading the way with 10 points. The freshman added three steals, one assist and one block. Chelsea Herrera had eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

Brown netted five points and had two steals, Cooper had four points to go with a team-high nine steals. The Lady Bucks had 21 steals on the day. Kelsea Perkinson and Maddie Mayo each scored four points, Esquivel, Hall and Hernandez each had a bucket and Rolando finished with one point.

Lowry travels to Lovelock on Tuesday for a non-conference game with Pershing County at 11 a.m.

The Lady Bucks return to their home floor on Friday, Jan. 3, to play Sparks at 3 p.m. Lowry then hosts Truckee on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m.
