Except for a stretch during the State Farm Invitational at the end of December, the Lowry High School junior varsity girls basketball team has not had to worry about playing in a close game.

That all changed Saturday morning as the Lady Bucks hosted Churchill County. It didn't look like it at first, with Lowry dominating the first quarter with a double-digit lead. The Greenwave cut the deficit to four points in the second half, before the Lady Bucks pulled away for a 47-24 win and to improve to 23-0 on the season.

"I am glad that happened to us," said LHS coach Amy Jenkins. "It has been a long time since we have a close game. We were just making bad mistakes that we shouldn't be doing at this time of the year. I wanted to see them play through it and they came back with a nice run."

The duo of Alyssa Kuskie and Kenadee Jeppsen provided a spark for Lowry, scoring 11 of the first 12 points for the Lady Bucks. Audrey Snow added a couple of baskets near the end of the first quarter to give Lowry an 18-6 advantage.

Lowry led by as many as 13 points on two occasions in the first half, following baskets by Kuskie and Kyllie Sappington. The Lady Bucks eventually settled for a 23-13 lead at halftime.

Churchill County used an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter, scoring baskets off of it press and cutting the Lowry lead to 27-23. After a rare timeout, the Lady Bucks responded with eight straight points, including the last four by Brooklyn Waller to go up 35-23.

Lowry extended the run by eight more points to start the fourth quarter, which included baskets from Hannah Hillyer and McKenna Jones. The Lady Bucks outscored Churchill County 12-1 in the final quarter and finished the contest on a 20-1 run after leading 27-23.

Jeppsen, Snow and Kuskie each had eight points to pace the Lady Bucks. Hillyer added seven points, Jones five, Waller four, Amaya Herrera three and Brooklyn Backus and Sappington two each.

Lowry hosts Fernley today at 3 p.m. in a game that was set for last Friday. The game was postponed due to poor weather conditions. The Lady Bucks travel to Spring Creek on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday to Elko for a 10 a.m. tip.
