BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lowry High School junior varsity girls basketball team let its defense do the talking on Friday afternoon, holding Battle Mountain to under double figures in a 34-9 win.

The Lady Bucks held the Lady Longhorns to three points or fewer in each quarter, while nine different Lowry players scored in the blowout win.

"We did some really good things out on the floor," said LHS head coach Chelsea Cabatbat. "Everyone got quality minutes. The one thing about this team is that you ask them to do something they go out and do it. They listen well and want to learn. I felt we really ran our offense well tonight."

Lowry (12-4 overall, 6-1 Division I-A, 1-1 Ruby Mountain) forced Battle Mountain to take two timeouts in the first quarter while building a 9-0 advantage on baskets by four different players. The Lady Longhorns ended a scoreless streak of nearly seven minutes on a bucket by Joelle Quintana for the only points of the first quarter for Battle Mountain.

Methodically running its offense, Lowry had four separate scorers in the second period to push the lead to 17-5 at halftime.

"The girls were very patient in running the offense," Cabatbat said. "They took care of the ball and waited until they got a good shot. I was very proud of the effort by everyone."

Jillian Albright and Maddie Mayo combined to score the first eight points of the third quarter for the Lady Bucks to make the score 25-3. It took the Lady Longhorns nearly six minutes to make a field goal in the third quarter. The made shot by Julieta Franco was the only field goal of the second half by Battle Mountain. The Lady Bucks outscored the Lady Longhorns 13-3 in the period to put the game out of reach.

Estefany Espinoza hit two jump shots in the fourth quarter for Lowry's only points in the final eight minutes, while Battle Mountain went scoreless in the fourth quarter until Quintana made a free throw with seven seconds left in the game.

"Estefany had a great night shooting for us," said the coach. "We got balanced scoring from everyone and that's what we were looking for."

Albright led all scorers as she equaled the total of Battle Mountain with nine points. Espinoza added six points, Chelsea Herrera and Mayo four each, Jasmine Anicker three and Dani Ricker, Hayley Hall, Sierra Thiede and Katie Tyree had two points apiece.

Lowry is back on the floor today to host Spring Creek at 3 p.m. in a Division I-A and Ruby Mountain contest.
