The Lowry High School junior varsity girls basketball team found itself in a rare battle last weekend but was able to pull out the victory to extend its win streak to six games.
The Lady Bucks cruised to a 47-8 triumph at Sparks on Jan. 31 and followed that with a 31-24 win over Truckee on Saturday to improve to 16-1 overall and 11-1 in the Division I-A North.
Against Sparks, Lowry held the Railroaders without a point in the first half. The Lady Bucks raced out to an 18-0 advantage in the first quarter and extended the margin to 31-0 at halftime.
Sparks finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a trio of points, only to see Lowry take a 43-3 lead on the strength of a 12-3 run in the period. The game was played with a running clock the rest of the way as part of the NIAA 40-point mercy rule.
The Lady Bucks' Chelsea Herrera nearly doubled Sparks' total with a game-high 14 points. She also added four rebounds. Caitlynn Cooper contributed eight points and Hayley Hall and Kelsea Perkinson each scored six points. Tiana Herrera scored four, Brooklyn Waller three and Maddie Mayo, Haley Rolando and Celeste Esquivel two each. Hall and Mayo had three assists apiece.
Lowry found itself trailing for one of the rare times this season as Truckee held a slim 7-4 margin after a quarter of play. The low-scoring affair continued into the second quarter, with the teams combining for 11 points. The Wolverines managed to hold on to a 12-10 advantage at halftime.
The momentum shifted out of the break, with Lowry going on a 12-2 run in the third quarter. The Lady Bucks grabbed a 22-14 lead and held on for the final eight minutes to finish the season sweep of the Wolverines.
Eight players scored for Lowry with Chelsea Herrera leading the way with eight points. Tiana Herrera scored six, Cooper five, Sierra Thiede four and Rolando, Hall, Waller and Mayo two each.
Lowry traveled to Fernley on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bucks travel to Fallon on Saturday to take on Churchill County at 11 a.m. The Greenwave are the only team to beat the Lady Bucks this season, winning 38-30 at Winnemucca in January.[[In-content Ad]]
