WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School junior varsity girls basketball team renewed its rivalry with Elko on Tuesday afternoon in Winnemucca.

The two schools, separated by 125 miles on Interstate 80, did not disappoint the fans, with the Indians pulling out a 32-28 victory.

The Lady Bucks (11-4 overall, 6-1 Division I-A, 0-1 Ruby Mountain) held the biggest lead of the first half at three points at 9-6 in the first quarter.

After Elko scored the first two points of the contest, Lowry held the advantage for much of the first half, until the Indians made a basket with just seconds left in the second quarter to take a 15-13 halftime lead.

Elko was the first to take control of the action, outscoring Lowry 8-2 at the start the third quarter to lead 23-15. Freshman Sierra Thiede kept the Lady Bucks within striking distance with a pair of buckets - the only two field goals of the third quarter for Lowry. Hayley Hall added two free throws to trim the Elko advantage to six points, at 25-19.

The Indians appeared to put the game out of reach, netting the first seven points of the fourth period and forcing the Lady Bucks to call timeout trailing 32-19 with 5:21 to play.

Lowry's defense shined from there, holding Elko without a point the rest of the game. The Lady Bucks picked up baskets by Jasmine Anicker and Thiede and a 3-point shot from Jillian Albright to close the gap to 32-28 with a little over a minute to play.

The Lady Bucks had a couple of opportunities to close the gap but missed a couple of shots at the end.

Albright led Lowry with 11 points, Thiede added eight, Anicker five and Chelsea Herrera and Hall two each.

Prior to Tuesday's meeting with Elko, Lowry notched two victories last weekend, beating Dayton 55-30 on Friday, Jan. 11, in Winnemucca, while going on the road Saturday to knock off South Tahoe 39-28.

The Lady Bucks scored the first seven points of the game against Dayton, with five of those by Thiede. Lowry led 15-5 at one time in the first quarter, only to see the Dust Devils cut that deficit to 15-13 early in the second period. The Lady Bucks responded with an 18-3 run of their own to lead 33-16 at halftime.

Lowry used a balanced scoring attack to increase the advantage in the second half to 29 points.

Ten different Lady Buckaroos scored, with Thiede and Ricker contributing 11 and 10 points, respectively. Albright added nine, Herrera and Anicker eight each, Maddie Mayo, Shaylee Robertson, Katie Tyree and Hall had two points apiece and Estefany Espinoza one.

After an early-morning bus trip on Saturday, Lowry overcame a slow start at South Tahoe on the strength of a 19-3 run in the third quarter to beat the Vikings 39-28.

The Lady Bucks trailed 16-12 at halftime but picked up seven points from Ricker, six by Albright and four from Herrera in the big third period.

Albright and Ricker paced Lowry with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Herrera added six, Robertson and Anicker four each and Hall two.

The Lady Bucks have just one game this weekend and travel to Battle Mountain tonight to face the Lady Longhorns at 3 p.m.
