If there has been one nemesis on the floor for the Lowry High School junior varsity boys basketball team, it is Churchill County.
As members of the freshmen team a season ago, the Greenwave beat the Buckaroos twice in Division I-A North play. When the two schools played in Fallon in January, Churchill County came from behind to knock off Lowry.
That all changed last Saturday as the Buckaroos finally earned a win over the Greenwave, 53-47 to avenge their only league loss of the season.
"That was a big win for the guys," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "This is a team that they had trouble beating. It was nice that we were finally able to beat them. They are one of the best teams in the league."
On the strength of two baskets by Brady Lange, the Buckaroos scored six of the first eight points of the game, only to see the Greenwave battle back to tie the game at 9-9 after eight minutes of play.
Lowry (13-1 Division I-A North, 19-4 overall) went on a 9-2 run to begin the second quarter off of baskets by Brody Goucher, Salvador Perez and Lange. The Buckaroos made just one basket in the last portion of the first half, which was buy Perez, as the Greenwave cut the Lowry lead to 22-20 at halftime after hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
With the game tied at 36 in the third quarter, Lowry went on an 8-2 run, kick-started by two baskets from Dominic Diaz. Christian Riddle and Lange added put back baskets to increase the gap to six points. The Greenwave were able to close within two points, at 34-32, at the end of the third quarter on a steal and layup.
Lowry quickly answered with seven straight points, four of those by Goucher and a 3-point play Jacob Hernandez. What seemed like a comfortable nine-point advantage, was trimmed down to two points at 44-42 with 2:15 left to play.
Moments later Hernandez put back his own miss and Diaz added a layup off a teal to make the score 50-44. Churchill County lost its composure from there. Getting a technical foul called on them. Lowry went on to extend the lead to 53-44 and never looked back.
Lange led Lowry with 14 points, while Goucher added 11 and Diaz 11. Riddle and Hernandez each had six points, Perez four and Jed Teichert two.
Lowry was back in action Tuesday night at home against Fernley in a game that was postponed from last Friday. The Buckaroos raced out to an early lead and never trailed in the 49-32 win.
The Buckaroos scored the first 10 points of the game and led by 11 points at halftime. A 10-5 run in the third quarter by the Buckaroos sealed the victory.
Teichert led Lowry with 15 points, Goucher added seven, Hernandez six, Riddle five. Lane Allen, Joe Taylor and Lange four each and Darrin Nelson and Perez had two points apiece.
Lowry closes out its season on the road this weekend, starting today at Spring Creek at 4:30 p.m. The Buckaroos fave Elko on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
