Lowry JV boys soccer team drops three league matches

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School junior varsity boys soccer team came away with a tie and two losses in its last three matches.

The Buckaroos (0-3-1) were back at home on Tuesday afternoon to take on Churchill County, where they lost 4-2 to the Greenwave. Lowry was on the road last weekend and was defeated 4-3 by Sparks on Friday, Sept. 13. The trip continued on to South Tahoe on Saturday, where the Vikings won 10-0.

"We cleaned things up against Churchill County compared to our last game with South Tahoe, which was a debacle," said LHS head coach Ron Espinola. South Tahoe exposed us on defense and we cleaned that up today. The one thing that we have been working on is communication."

Churchill County took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, only to see Lowry tie the game 10 minutes later on a shot by Ariel Gonzalez. The Greenwave added two goals toward the end of the first half to take a 3-1 advantage at the break.

The Buckaroos closed the gap to a single goal in the early part of the second half on a shot by Roland Clement. The freshman took the shot near the goal was kicked the net by a Churchill County player trying to kick the ball out of the box.

The Greenwave gave themselves some breathing room with a goal in the 62nd minute.

"We saw some things that we could take advantage in the second half but didn't," added the coach. "That was the disappointing thing. We had our chances but did not take advantage of our chances."

In the loss to Sparks, the Railroaders raced out to a 3-0 lead, only to see the Buckaroos tie the match. Steven Cholico and Gonzalez scored in the 35th and 36th minutes to close the gap to 3-2.

The Buckaroos tied the match in the 52nd minute off a shot by Andy Mendoza that was crossed by Gonzalez.

Sparks notched the winning goal in the 60th minute off a shot that hit off the post then a Lowry player and into the net.

"We do have some time before our next game," Espinola said. "The way that things are progressing, you can see the development that is happening. Right now, we just have to be more fundamentally sound."

Lowry is off until Saturday, Sept. 28, when it travels to Reno to face Sage Ridge.
