The Lowry High School junior varsity boys basketball team continues to improve and remained undefeated in Division I-A North play with two victories on the road.
The Buckaroos traveled to Truckee on Saturday and came away with a 33-21 win. Lowry got off to a slow start, leading 13-9 at halftime, but used a strong fourth quarter to pull away.
"It was good to get a win on a road trip when you leave at 4:30 a.m," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "It wasn't the prettiest game, but we'll take it."
Jed Teichert led the Buckaroos with 11 points and Dominic Diaz had six points.
"Both guys harassed Truckee's guards all game," Beatty said. "Our defense was good and we rebounded well. Darrin (Nelson) and Travis (Hardy) both took care of the ball and were a solid back court all game."
Lowry (4-0 Division I-A North, 8-3 overall) was back on the road Tuesday and earned a 53-44 victory over Sparks. The coach said the Buckaroos took double-digit leads, only to let Sparks back in to the game.
"We let them back in multiple times," Beatty said. "We've got to learn to put
teams away and finish games."
Teichert had a team-high 11 points and Christian Riddle had a good game on defense and had six points on two big 3-pointers to stop runs by Sparks, according to the coach.
Brady Lange and Brody Goucher played well inside, scoring seven and 11
points, respectively.
Joe Taylor, Salvador Perez and Jacob Hernandez gave the Buckaroos a big boost off the bench with their size and strength. The trio scored five, four, and two points, respectively.
Lowry was in Reno over Christmas beak at the State Farm Tournament and went 2-2 over the four days. The Buckaroos beat Damonte Ranch 43-35 and Galena 44-32, while suffering losses to Spanish Springs 53-47 and Douglas 53-30.
Goucher had 24 points against Spanish Springs and 18 versus Galena.
"I was happy with our performance," Beatty said. "The kids played good ball and earned respect."
Lowry is back on the road this weekend and plays Fernley today at 4:30 p.m. and Churchill County on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Buckaroos host Elko on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
