The Lowry High School junior varsity boys basketball team picked up a pair of impressive victories on the road this past weekend.
The Buckaroos made the long trip to South Tahoe and came away with a 52-23 victory over the Vikings. Lowry held a four-point lead after eight minutes of play, but used a 34-15 run in the middle two quarters, including a 19-5 spurt in the third to break the contest open.
"This is the best we've played all year on the road," said LHS coach Grant Beatty. "We were finally able to put a complete game together."
The Buckaroos picked up a balanced scoring attack from Jed Teichert (15), Brady Lange (10) and Brody Goucher (nine).
"The kids did a great job switching out of different presses and defensive looks," added the coach. "I was very proud of how well the bench guys came in prepared and filled a role."
According to Beatty, Darrin Nelson had a great steal and layup and took care of the ball well. Dominic Diaz did a good job of breaking pressure and setting the Buckaroos up in an offense. Salvador Perez provided a physical presence inside with his strong rebounding and scoring four points,
Lowry (9-1 Division I-A North, 15-4 overall) moved on to Dayton on Saturday and left little doubt in the outcome with a 15-0 run in the first quarter to win 52-31.
"We got off to a great start with some great man to man defense and some trapping," Beatty said. Our guards Travis (Hardy), Darrin, Dominic and Jed all took care of the ball as we only had 4 turnovers at halftime."
The scoring was balanced as 10 different players scored in the game for the Buckaroos. Teichert, who scored 17 points off steals, jumpers and drives in the lane to lead Lowry. Christian Riddle also played well, scoring five 5 points, but also got big rebounds and did all the little things that makes him so valuable to us, scoring to Beatty.
Lange continued his strong weekend with 10 points and he creates a tough match-up with his length and quickness, Beatty added.
"He really has a great understanding of what we want to do defensively," said Beatty.
The coach added that Mike Rangel has shown a ton of improvement and has been playing tremendous defense and that the hustle is always there. The coach also credited the play of Hardy, Joe Taylor and Jacob Hernandez.
Lowry hosts Sparks today at 4:30 p.m. and Truckee on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
