Lowry JV baseball sweeps doubleheader from Elko Bucks finish season Saturday at Spring Creek

WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School junior varsity baseball team picked up some momentum on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of league rival Elko.

The Buckaroos won the opener 12-10 in a five-inning game called due to the time-limit rule. The nightcap went five innings as well, but that was due to Lowry winning 11-1 because of the 10-run rule on Tytin Johnson's walk-off single.

"We played some good baseball today," said LHS coach James Williams. "We are starting to get better and today we did not leave too many guys on base. The offense was good; we got a lot of walks and were disciplined at the plate. We made their pitchers work. That led to a lot of base runners."

Lowry grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first in the opening game off of two walks by Thomas Schwartz and Donovan Brumm and a double by Garrett Naveran. Elko answered with a rally of its own, scoring five times in the fourth inning to claim its first lead at 5-3.

The Buckaroos did not trail long, as the first four batters (Brumm, Christian Dawson, Naveran and Johnson) reached base without the aid of a hit. Lane Mentaberry, the sixth batter of the inning, finally picked up the first hit of the inning, a double to score Naveran and Johnson. Troy Hardy singled right after that and later scored on a throwing error. Brumm added a RBI-single to plate Nelson and Schwartz came around to score on an error to make the score 9-5.

In the back and forth contest, Elko tied the game in the top of the fourth on three Lowry walks and an error. The Buckaroos went back up a run in the bottom of the fourth after Mentaberry reached on an error and was driven home by Hardy.

Lowry committed two errors in the top of the fifth inning, allowing Elko to square the game at 10-10. In the final at bats of the opener, the Buckaroos used a walk by Brumm and a double from Christian Riddle to pull out the win.

In the nightcap it was all Lowry, as the Buckaroos scored six times in the first inning and never looked back. Nelson began the frame with a leadoff triple and scored on Schwartz's single to left field. Following a walk to Brumm and Dusty Bryan reaching on a fielder's choice, Christian Gray used a single to drive in the third run. Colin Doyle and Mentaberry walked after the base hit and Hardy wrapped up the rally with a two-RBI single.

Elko scored its only run in the second inning off two walks, a hit by pitch and single but were shut down in the other four innings and picked up just two hits in the game.

Lowry tacked on a single run in the third inning as Doyle drove home Gray. The Bucks ended the doubleheader on the walk-off single by Johnson.

"We gave up a little too many walks in the first game but overall it was pretty good," Williams said. "We built early leads today and maintained them. At the beginning of the year it was just the opposite. We did not get complacent, which was nice to see. Everyone stepped up today."

Lowry is scheduled to close out its season Saturday in Spring Creek with a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
