WINNEMUCCA - Rachel French was Lowry High School's first-place winner in the local Poetry Out Loud competition.

The annual event was held in Winnemucca on Feb. 22. It is a national competition with prizes at each level.

French will compete at the state level in Reno on Saturday, March 24, at noon. The national competition is May 13 - 15 in Washington, D.C.

Senior Hailey Samms placed second, Eman Eizenga third and Lily Moravec fourth.

Contestants must memorize classic poetry from the Poetry Out Loud website and recite it effectively for a panel of judges. They are scored on accuracy, physical presence, voice control, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty and evidence of understanding.
