Lowry holds elections for class, student body offices

WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School held elections for class and student body offices on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Prior to elections, candidates turned in an application and were interviewed by LHS faculty members for their positions. Candidates for class offices then gave their speeches to their class, and the class voted. Candidates for student body offices gave their speeches three times, in front of the current freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

Though the class vote was important, it was not the only thing that determined the winner. The written application was worth 10 percent, the teacher evaluation was worth 15 percent and the interview was worth 25 percent. The student vote result was worth the other 50 percent. The candidates who were running opposed had to earn a total of 65 points (not including the student vote) to qualify for the office.

There are several requirements that the candidates must have met in order to be eligible for the office. They must hold a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA during the 2011-2012 school year and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA for the 2012-2013 school year. Potential officers must also be enrolled in Leadership as well as attend Lowry full-time during the year they are in office.

Next year's student body officers are Jennae Johnson, president, Matthew Ruehl, vice president, Carli Evatz, secretary, Savannah Montero, treasurer, and Taylor LaTray, historian. The senior class officers are Mary Castaneda, president, Raven Black, vice president, and Yoana Chavez, secretary/treasurer. The junior class officers for next year are Maeve Donovan, president, Allison Barron, vice president, and Carly Bell, secretary/treasurer. Next year's sophomore class officers include Brycen Prokasky, president, Chelsea Baker, vice president, and Irene Diaz, secretary/treasurer.
