WINNEMUCCA - Select students from Lowry High School Band traveled to Elko January 15-16 and participated in the Northeast Nevada Honor Band."The band students have a wonderful experience of playing in a band with full instrumentation," said Paul Criddle, head of Lowry High School's music department. "That is something they don't experience in our own band at Lowry. They learn from a nationally recognized conductor who teaches them more about music and the finer details about playing in an ensemble of that size."

"They also learn the value of hard work and how to focus on polishing a piece of music. It always amazes me that they are able to get six pieces of music ready for a concert with only a total of ten hours of rehearsal," said Criddle

Honor Band this year was under the direction of the renown conductor John Miller. Miller has received numerous awards for excellence at the district, regional, state and national levels. He is the director of bands at American Fork High School in American Fork, Utah, a position he has held for the past 27 years.

"Honor Band students are a select group of the better musicians from all the schools in our zone," said Criddle, who added that the social aspect of meeting and working with students from other schools also gives the students the opportunity to develop friends with whom they often keep in contact throughout their high school years and beyond.

At Honor Band this year, the Band Director of University of Nevada Reno came and talked to the students about opportunities for scholarships and involvement in university music programs.

Students prepared for the concert with two days of intensive rehearsal and performed the evening of Jan. 16 for parents, friends, and concert-goers in Elko.
