Lowry High School students have a tradition of community service

WINNEMUCCA - It may be necessary to wait until after graduation to participate in an extended service trip or get a full time job at a nonprofit organization, but there are several ways local students can serve while still enrolled in high school.

"Key Club is an international student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character, and develop leadership. KEY stands for Kiwanis Educating Youth," explained faculty adviser DaraLee Millikan.

The Soup Kitchen on May 9 is our most recent service project," she said. "We volunteer there every month throughout the entire year." Millikan described some additional service projects students may participate in through her group.

"We were just recently asked to help with an out-of-town gun show in April because the owner was so appreciative of our help here in Winnemucca," she explained. "We also coordinate with the senior center director to help senior citizens with yard work or whatever else they need a couple of times per month."

Millikan said the club does over 10 different projects throughout the year. She stressed that Key Club is open to any student who wishes to perform acts of service in the community.

"Key Club welcomes everyone," she said, adding that there are no rules about grade point averages or having any specific skills. "All you have to do is have a little curiosity about the club, attend one of our meetings, which are every Thursday at lunch, pay the $15 dues for official membership of Key Club International, and start helping us earn service hours."

Tanya Grady is in charge of the Lowry High School Student Council and Leadership class. Like Key Club, this class exists to provide students the chance to serve others in the community.

"Each student is required to do five hours of community service per quarter and the activities vary per student," she explained. Although this class asks students to perform individual acts of service, the group also bands together to serve the community.

"We assisted as a group with Operation Easter this year," Grady said.

Key Club and the Lowry High School Student Council and Leadership class are just two of the service organizations available to Lowry High School students. For more information, contact the faculty adviser of the organization of your choice.
