Lowry High School student/athletes celebrate signing day

It was a time for celebration last Wednesday at Lowry High School as four students made it official on their intent for the future at different colleges.

Beau Billingsley, a four-time Division I-A state wrestling champion, will join his brother, Michael, at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Billingsley was also named the Division I-A North Offensive Player of the Year in football in 2014.

Before a student can be considered for appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, they must obtain a nomination. A nomination does not guarantee appointment to the academy; however, no appointment can be offered without one.

The majority of applicants to the academy obtain nominations in the Congressional and Vice Presidential categories. The academy also reserves a select number of cadet appointments for nominees in the Military Affiliated, U.S. Territory and International categories.

Air Force is a member of the Mountain West Conference in most sports except wrestling. The Mountain West doesn't affiliate itself with wrestling.

The Falcons are part of the Western Regional Conference, along with North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley and University of Wyoming.

Kylee McClellan has signed to play softball for Clark College in Vancouver, Wash. The Penguins are members of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.

There are 34 schools in the association and the Peguins compete in the South Region, along with Southwestern Oregon Communinty College (Coos, Bay, Ore.) Chemeketa (Salem, Ore.), Clackamas (Oregon City, Ore.), Lower Columbia (Longview, Wash.) and Mt. Hood (Gresham, Ore.). A former temmate of McClellan's, Ere Higbee, plays for Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Clark finished last year 7-28, but has already exceeded that win total with a 9-7 record to this point of the season.

A season ago, she was named to the Division I-A North and all-state first team. McClellan led the Lady Bucks with a .437 batting average to go with 38 hits. The junior drove in 20 runs, hit two home runs and a team-high eight doubles.

A pair of Lowry football players will be headed to Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. The school has become a poular destination for Buckaroo players. In the past few years, Jace Billingsley, Michal Arenas and Calvin Connors has played for the NAIA school.

Now, Luis Cardenas and Felipe Moreno can be added to that list; both will play for head coach Tim Camp.

This past season, Cardenas was a first-team selection in the Division I-A North, as well as the state level on the offensive line. Moreno was a second-team choice on the offensive line in the Division I-A North.

Cardenas was also a first-team choice at center in the 2013 season at center.

The Mountaineers finished the 2014 season at 8-3, which included a 31-27 win over Southern Oregon in the season finale. However, Eastern Oregon did not get a bid in to the NAIA Football Championships.
