Lowry High FBLA students shine during state convention

WINNEMUCCA - Lowry High School's future business leaders made an impressive showing at their state conference.

April 21-23, members from the school's Future Business of Leaders of America (FBLA) organization attended the State Business Leadership Conference in Las Vegas where they competed against 40 schools and 467 students to determine who will represent Nevada at the national level this summer.

According to Lisa Scott, the group's adviser, the results were impressive. Twelve members attended the conference, all 12 competed and all 12 placed in the top 10. Additionally, Scott was named Regional Adviser of the Year.

As Scott put it: "We may be a small chapter, but we were definitely noticed during the awards ceremony."

Additionally, Lowry High School took 7th place in Sweepstakes, which is quite a feat since LHS was the smallest school with the smallest number of competitors in the top 10.

The group is now turning their sights to the FBLA National Leadership Conference from June 24 through July 1 in Anaheim, Calif. The top two to three students in each event will compete. All costs will be paid by the club.

Scott, a former FBLA adviser in Washington and Elko County, said Lowry High School's chapter came about because of her prior positive experiences with the organization.

"While visiting with a couple of my students I told them stories about places we went and things that we did," she said.

Scott said the students took the initiative to look up information regarding the organization and then encouraged - actually Scott said it was more like "begged and pleaded" - to begin a chapter here.

"I weakened," she joked, "and I became their adviser since I truly believe that this is one of the best student organizations."

She continued, "The opportunities for travel, competition, learning and scholarship are amazing."

The FBLA is the premier organization for student leaders preparing for careers in business, management, entrepreneurship and technology.

For more than 65 years, FBLA has been the place where 10 million students have found the keys to unlocking the doors to career success, personal achievement, and business leadership, along with the middle level and collegiate division.

Scott thanked her co-teachers at Lowry High School for their contributions toward the group's success.

"I'm grateful for the education and support they are giving to these students," she said. "Our students made a huge impression on the judges and chapters from across the state, and it was due, in large part, to our teachers' efforts."

She also sent a special thanks to teachers Ron Beck and Ron Espinola for helping to prepare some of the teams, and to Winnemucca Junior High School teacher Kristin Flanders for helping to chaperone the group at their state conference.

The group is still looking for some last-minute donations. Interested businesses and organizations may contact Scott via email at lscott@humboldt.k12.nv.us.
