With the ability to split its team up, a group of Lowry High School wrestlers made their way to Lovelock last Saturday for the Lovelock Invitational that featured a number of teams from northern Nevada.
Lowry finished second on the day with 158 points, while Battle Mountain, the two-time defending Division III state champion, won the event with 214 points. Reed of the Division I North was third.
Bryan Ramos went 3-0 on the day and won the 220-pound weight class, pinning all three of his opponents. Kelvin Meza (195) was 3-1 during the tournament, falling in the championship match to Pershing County's Ty Arnett.
Michael Venzor also earned a runner-up finish at 138 pounds, going 3-1 on the day. His only loss was to a Reed wrestler in the final.
Lowry's Chris Karchella defeated teammate Micah Somers in the 285-pound class by decision for third place. Karchella went 5-1 on the day and Somers was 3-3.
Buckaroo teammates battled for third place at 145 pounds as well with Seth Hornbarger beating Cameron Okuma. Hornbarger won four of his five matches and Okuma was 3-3. Nathen Blanco placed fourth at 120 pounds.
Ryan Johnson (126) and Seth Duncan (160) each won three matches for Lowry, while Zach Peters (106), Brian Day (113), Jackson Brown (152), Cade Billingsley (160) and Bryan Terry (182) won two matches apiece.
Lowry is back on the mat on Friday, Jan. 2, and Saturday, Jan. 3, for the Sparks Invitational.
