Lowry grad Trevor Grant qualifies for NCAA Division II wrestling championships

CHADRON, Neb. - CSU-Pueblo qualified four wrestlers for the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships in Trevor Grant, Jesse Hillhouse, Ray Hall and Niko Bogojevic at the RMAC/Super Region 4 Championships this past weekend in Chadron, Neb.

Grant, a Lowry High School graduate, placed fourth at 165 pounds after reaching the championship quarterfinals.

Grant defeated Brock Lamb 4-1 of Simon Frasier University in the opening round, but lost 12-7 to San Francisco State's Isiah Jimenez in the quarterfinals. Jimenez went on to finish second in the weight class.

The junior moved into the consolation bracket where he defeated Juan Carlo Maynes of Grand Canyon University 6-0. Grant followed that by pinning Sam Thoman of Fort Hayes State before losing 4-3 to Justin Samora of Adams State in the third-place match.

As a team, the Thunderwolves turned in thier finest performance in a regional tournament since the program returned in 2008. CSU-Pueblo finished sixth out of 12 teams, its highest finish since winning the regional championship in 2001.

The NCAA Division II National Championships begin on Friday, March 8 and will take place in Birmingham, Ala. CSU-Pueblo is seeking its first individual national champion since 1999.
