Despite shooting its highest score of the season, the Lowry High School boys golf team is still atop the Division I-A North standings.
After a 20-day layoff, the Buckaroos were back on the course on April 10 at Wildcreek Golf Course in Sparks. Lowry ran away with the team championship, shooting a 403. Spring Creek was second at 443 and Elko was third at 452.
Lowry's Ethan Gray and Andy Mendoza were first and second, respectively, with scores of 73 and 75. Chris Mendoza shot an 80, Josh Shaver an 84 and Josh Rose (91) and Hunter Dimock (98) rounded out the scores for the Buckaroos.
"The scores were a little higher than they have been," said LHS coach Andrew Meyer. "Wildcreek is a tough track for the kids and a tough walk. The biggest thing is we gave up a lot of shots on the greens. We had a couple kids four and five putt. You just can't give up that many shots."
Lowry widened its lead in the season-long standings to four points over Elko. The Buckaroos have 27 points, the Indians 23 and Spartans 22. The top three teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the state championships at Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump on May 21-22.
The Buckaroos are back in action on Thursday and Friday with tournaments in Elko and Spring Creek.
