In order to stay in the playoff hunt, the Lowry High School girls soccer team need victories to close out the regular season.
The Lady Bucks did just that with easy wins over two Lyon County schools. Lowry went on the road last Saturday and beat Fernley 6-0.
Monique Rodriguez scored 30 seconds into the match to give the Lady Bucks a 1-0 lead and the senior added goals in the 25th and 26th minutes to stretch the advantage to 3-0 at halftime.
After the senior did all the work in the first 40 minutes, it was time for a freshman to shine in the second half. Bailey Sapien recorded all three goals in the final 40 minutes to give the Lady Bucks the shutout victory.
Lowry (5-5-2 Division I-A North), 6-6-3 overall) was back home Tuesday to face Dayton and the match was played almost entirely on the side of the field occupied by the Lady Bucks in the 7-0 win.
"We were able to score early like we did against Fernley," said LHS coach Melanie Rasor. "It is always good to get that momentum at the start of the match. I do so much changing with the girls on the field and it builds confidence that they can play other spots. That really helps us out."
Audrey Snow began the scoring in the third minute on a shot that hit the bottom corner of the net. The sophomore added a second goal 15 minutes later as she got free on a breakaway.
Caitlynn Cooper added to the lead with a penalty kick in the 25th minute and Lowry put the match away with three goals in a five-minute span near the end of the first half.
Sapien scored in the 33rd minute of a corner kick by Maddie Mayo and Mayo made the score 5-0 two minutes later on a penalty kick after Dayton was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box. Rodriguez increased the advantage to 6-0 in the 38th minute after breaking free of a throw in.
The Buckaroos subbed freely in the final 40 minutes and moved a number of girls around the field to different spots. Lowry closed out the scoring in the 58th minute, when Jasmine Marchand moved from goalie spot to on the field. She collected a rebound of a Sapien shot in the 58th minute and put the ball in the back of the net.
"It was fun to see Jasmine get a goal," Rasor said. "She just started playing last year and has come along way. She is a basketball player and I think that makes her a good goalie."
Lowry hosted Elko on Thursday and results were not available at press time. A win by the Lady Bucks keeps them in the playoff hunt, while a loss ends likely ends a run to the postseason. Lowry travels to Truckee today for match at 3 p.m. The match was postponed earlier in the season due to the King Fire in California in September.
Lowry is back home Tuesday to play Spring Creek at 4 p.m. The Lady Bucks will be honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month and wear pink jerseys. All fans are encouraged to wear pink.[[In-content Ad]]
