Even though the Division I-A North regional title is out of reach, the Lowry High School girls golf team is starting to peak at the right time.

The Lady Bucks knocked off Elko for the second time in three weeks, beating the Indians 361-363 in Fernley on Thursday, Oct. 9. The 361 is the best score in the Division I-A North this season.

"We played some good golf and the girls shot some of their best scores of the year," said LHS coach Vince Mendiola. "If I can get the girls to cut a few more strokes off in the final couple weeks, we have a good chance to stay in front of Elko. With the scores they are shooting in the south, that probably will not be good enough. The goal at playing at state is to be the best team in the North. Who knows, maybe we can sneak out a second-place finish."

Fernley was a distant third on its home course with a 412, Churchill County (429) was fourth and Spring Creek (431) rounded out the top five.

Fernley's Brittany Evans and Lowry's Alyssa Dendary tied for the top spot at 75, with Evans claiming first on the scorecard tiebreaker. The 75 for Dendary was a season best.

"She is playing well right now," Mendiola said. "I want her to finish strong in Fallon. I would love to see Alyssa come out next Monday and Tuesday and throw away those double bogeys. It would be great to see her in the hunt for a state title. She went back to Elko and played the course and looked at it again."

Elise Rose and Brooklyn Backus each shot 94 for the Lady Bucks and Savanna Cox fired a 98 to have four Lowry players under 100.

"That is what we need from those girls," added the coach. "Brooklyn keeps bringing her score down and Elise is bringing her score down. If they can get down in the 80s that would be a big plus."

Veronica Jones carded a 112 for Lowry and Kaity Sample shot a 131.

The Division I-A North finished the regular season on Wednesday in Fallon.

Elko, Lowry and Fernley have clinched spots in the state tournament to be held Monday and Tuesday at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. The Indians claimed the Division I-A North title for the second time in three years.

"The girls have a good feeling of what is going on," Mendiola said. "They are confident right now. Hopefully, we can come out and play well and surprise a few people."[[In-content Ad]]
