The pavement of Interstate 80 was a familiar site once again, as the Lowry High School girls soccer team made the trek to Elko County to face Spring Creek.
This was the second meeting of the season between the two rivals, with the Spartans winning 1-0 at the beginning of the year in a preseason tournament.
The league match on Tuesday provided more scoring, but unfortunately for the Lady Bucks the outcome was the same. The Spartans scored three times in the first half on their way to a 4-2 win.
"We played well," said LHS coach Melanie Rasor. "We switched some things around and the girls did well with that. It was good to know that we can compete with them."
Lowry began the scoring just two minutes in the match, when a shot by Kenadee Jeppsen hit the cross bar and dropped behind the goal line.
Spring Creek equalized the game the 10th minute on a goal by Baylee Byrns.
The Spartans regained the advantage shortly afterward on a second goal by Byrns and Spring Creek took a 3-1 lead to halftime, as Aliyah Tsosie scored near the end of the half.
Byrns picked her hat trick midway through the second half to increase the margin to 4-1, when a goal by Monique Rodriguez closed the gap to two in the final minutes. However, the Lady Bucks got no closer and dropped to 2-2-1 in the Division I-A North and 3-3-2 overall.
"We still had quite a few opportunities to score," Rasor said. "Even though we lost, it was a good game for us."
Lowry is currently fifth in the league standings and the top four teams advance to the Division I-A Regional Championships in Truckee. South Tahoe leads at 6-0-1, Truckee is second at 3-0-2 and Spring Creek (5-1-1) and Elko (4-2-1) are third and fourth, respectively.
Lowry will get to enjoy its home field with three consecutive matches in Winnemucca, but those will come in four days. The Lady Bucks face South Tahoe today at 4 p.m., Truckee Monday at 4 p.m. and Churchill County on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
"It's not the most ideal schedule to have," Rasor said. "You don't have much time to recover with that many matches in a short amount of time. We have a good bench that can come on help when we need them to."[[In-content Ad]]
