WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School freshmen volleyball team split its last two matches, defeating Truckee in two sets on Friday, Sept. 20, and losing to Churchill County in two sets this past Tuesday.

The Lady Bucks made the trip to Fallon with just six players and the Greenwave handed Lowry its first league loss of the season.

"It was a tough one to lose," said LHS head coach Mandy Chaffin. "We had just the six players with no subs. Out of the six on the floor, one was probably healthy. Everyone on the team is just sick right now. The girls played hard and we just ran out of gas at the end. It made it difficult to play hard. Still, I was proud of the how the girls played. They played smart and there were a lot of battles back and forth. It was just the small mistakes that got us."

Tiana Herrera led the Lady Bucks with three kills to go with two digs and one ace.

Aimee Brandon added three kills and two aces. Annaleise Gabica had one kill and Jade Moore one ace.

"We had the lead in both games, but could not hold on in the end," Chaffin said. "It was a match that we could have won. The first game is everything in the match. If you can win that it gives you the momentum for the rest of the match. You could see we were a little down after losing that first game."

Lowry (4-1 Division I-A North, 7-3 overall) made the trek to California and came away with a 25-18 and 25-14 victory over Truckee.

"It was a good win for us after a long road trip," added the coach. "The girls were tired and little sluggish to begin but came back and played well. Truckee had a good team and we came out with a nice win. We are doing so many nice things as a team. The girls' skill level has just skyrocketed."

Herrera finished with three aces and two kills for the Lady Bucks, with Brandon adding three aces. Gabica contributed one kill and one ace and Moore and Aushina Townsend had two aces and one ace, respectively.

Lowry hosts South Tahoe today at 4 p.m. and is back at home against Elko on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

"It should be two good matches and I am looking forward to it," Chaffin said. "South Tahoe has a good program and Elko will be looking at getting some revenge on us. We beat Elko in the Truckee tournament and I think we surprised them with that win. The biggest thing we have to do is get healthy. If we can get healthy, we will be OK."
