WINNEMUCCA - After hitting a bit of a speedbump midway through the season, the Lowry High School freshmen volleyball team is back on a three-match winning streak.
The Lady Bucks played host to Truckee on Friday, Oct. 18, and beat the Wolverines 25-18, 16-25 and 15-10 to earn the season sweep.
Lowry was back at home on Tuesday and easily defeated Churchill County 25-9 and 25-21 to improve to 10-4 in the Division I-A North and 13-6 overall.
"We hit a little patch where we were struggling," said LHS head coach Mandy Chaffin. "We were without one our better players for a couple of weeks and that hurt us. We lost our confidence for a while, but we are gaining that back."
Against Truckee, Lowry used a 9-0 run in the first set to lead 16-7 after a kill by Alexis Allen and an ace by Aimee Brandon. Tiana Herrera picked up her fourth ace of the set to give the Lady Bucks a 22-15 lead and Lowry went on to win the set off a Truckee miss hit.
The second set went back and forth in the beginning with Lowry leading 3-1 in the early going. Truckee came back to take a four-point advantage at 11-7. The Lady Bucks closed the gap to 13-11 after a kill and two aces by Herrera. That was as close as Lowry got, with Truckee finishing the set on a 12-5 run.
The Lady Bucks came back with a strong start in the fifth set and held off the Wolverines to notch the victory.
Herrera finished the night with eight aces and four kills, Brandon added four aces and three kills, Allen had two kills and Jade Moore had one ace.
Lowry carried that momentum into Tuesday's match with Churchill County. The Lady Bucks dominated the Greenwave in the first set, winning by 16 points. Churchill County made it tougher on Lowry in the second set, but the Lady Bucks were able to pull out the win.
"The girls worked hard," Chaffin said. "In practice, I focused on working hard, working together and playing smart. We did all of those things tonight. We want to end the year on a high note."
Herrera finished with five kills, five aces and an assist and Annaleise Gabica had one kill in her return to the floor after coming back from an injury. Amaya Herrera had 10 assists, Brandon and Allen finished with five and three kills, respectively.
Lowry travels to Elko on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match with the Indians and closes out its season on Saturday, Nov. 2, at home against Spring Creek at 11 a.m.
