WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School freshmen football team had the tough task of opening its season against the Yerington JV on Friday, Aug. 31, on the Lions' home field.
Yerington scored in each of the four quarters, on its way to a 34-0 victory.
"It was freshmen football," said LHS coach Greg Scott. "We made some mistakes that hurt us. We fumbled the ball on our first play and gave Yerington a short field to work with and they went on to score."
The Buckaroos had some success moving the ball, but had a number of big plays called back on penalties.
"It seemed every big play we had was brought back on penalties," Scott said. "It would be a holding call here or a block in the back on another play."
Scott noted he was pleased with the play of running back and linebacker Wyatt Warn.
Lowry made its home debut on Thursday against Wooster and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos are tentatively set to play at South Tahoe on Friday, Sept. 14, at 4:30 p.m. The Vikings recently dropped their junior varsity program due to a lack of numbers and the freshmen game will be played in that spot.
"The next couple of games should give us a good gauge of where we are at," Scott said. "Yerington does some good things with its kids. We will get better as the year goes on."
