WINNEMUCCA - After facing one of its toughest JV squads on the schedule to start the season, the Lowry High School freshmen football team got back to playing ninth graders on its schedule, and came away with a 41-6 victory over Wooster on Thursday night in Winnemucca.
The Buckaroos (1-1 overall, 1-0 Division I-A North) scored 28 points in the second quarter to pull away for the victory.
"We cleaned some things up and it was much better than the week before," said LHS head coach Greg Scott. "We played someone that is more our speed. When you play a JV team, a lot of those kids have an extra year under their belt and that showed in that game. We played pretty good and figured some things out. It was a pretty much clean game for us after the first possession."
The only time Lowry did not score in the first half was its initial drive where two penalties negated big plays, ending the drive at the Wooster 19-yard line.
The Colts managed just two first downs and turned the ball over three times in the first half, including a 21-yard interception return by Omar Guerrero in the second quarter, which gave the Buckaroos a 28-0 lead.
Lowry opened the scoring with five minutes left in the first quarter on a 13-yard pass from Guerrero to Jared Rogers-Taylor. From there, the floodgates opened as the Buckaroos scored 28 points in less than a six-minute span in the second quarter. After the Colts turned the ball over on its next possession, the Buckaroos needed only a handful of plays to score, when Alan Mayorga ran in from 17 yards out.
Wooster fumbled on its next offensive play, and on fourth and 11, Guerrero connected with Nate Nelson from 36 yards out to up the margin to 20-0. Guerrero then intercepted Wooster's Joey Gates the next time the Colts snapped the ball, to quickly make the score 28-0.
Wooster's turnover woes continued, coughing up the ball on its next play, leading to a 7-yard touchdown run by James Boswell for a 34-0 halftime lead.
Mayorga picked up his second touchdown of the night with 5:51 left in the third quarter on a 20-yard run, which were the final points of the game for the Buckaroos, who substituted frequently throughout the game.
"I felt our first offense and first defense did a very good job," Scott said. "Alan runs hard and (Jacob) Boswell did a good job blocking. He is starting to figure out that fullback spot. The offensive line did a nice job for us. It was a good chance to get all the kids some playing time."
The Colts scored their lone touchdown with 98 seconds left in the game on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
In a scheduling change, Lowry will now play at South Tahoe on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Vikings recently dropped their JV program and the freshmen will take the place in the schedule.
"The challenge is now if we can play a team like that on the road," Scott said. "It is a long road trip for us and hopefully we are ready to play."
