ELKO - The Lowry High School freshmen girls basketball team has gotten to know its rival Elko over the past few weeks.

The Lady Bucks were playing the Indians for the third time in 16 days on Wednesday in Elko and came away with their second consecutive one-point victory, 41-40.

Caitlynn Cooper got Lowry off to a quick start with 10 points in the first quarter, and Banesa Trigueros added four points to give the Lady Bucks an 18-12 first-quarter lead.

Lowry's defense stepped up in the second period and held Elko to no field goals and two points in taking a 23-14 lead at halftime. The Lady Bucks nearly saw all of their advantage slip away as the Indians battled back with a 15-7 spurt to close the gap to a point, at 30-29.

The game remained close for the final eight minutes of play, but Lowry was able to hold on to its lead and knock off Elko for a third time this year.

Rolando led all scorers with 17 points, while Celeste Esquivel and Banesa Trigueros added six points apiece. Emalee Brown, Kelsea Perkinson, Shauna Smith, Megan Villarreal, Shandra Smith and Haley Rolando each had two points.

Against Elko, Cooper collected nine points in the first quarter and Brown added a basket to give the Lady Bucks an 11-8 advantage.

The lead was short-lived as Elko held Lowry scoreless in the second period to go in front 17-11 at halftime. The Buckaroos got back into the scoring column in the third period behind four points contributed by Esquivel, but still trailed eight points going into the fourth quarter.

Lowry rallied in the final eight minutes of action on the strength of free throws. The Lady Bucks were 7-of-12 from the charity stripe in aiding the comeback. Perkinson was 3-of-4 from the foul line, all in the fourth quarter for all of her points in the game.

Cooper led all scorers with 19 points, while Esquivel added six. Brown and Ana Gonzalez finished with four and two points, respectively.

In the loss to Fallon, the Greenwave raced out to a 24-5 lead in the first quarter and the Lady Bucks could never recover. Lowry netted 10 points in the third quarter but was outscored 12-2 in the final eight minutes of play.
